This morning Dennis Rogers, Steve Rogers, and I birded for a few hours in
Columbia County.
We found three Yellow-breasted Chats defending territories at an emerging clear
cut off Rocky Point Road.
The location was the first clear cut on the right as one ascends Rocky Point
Rd, from Highway 30. There is a gate that was open, but it might be prudent to
walk in from the road on the graveled logging road. Bare left where the
logging road branches to where a mountain bike path crosses the logging road,
with two well-made signs that indicate “Parking Lot” and “Andy Land”. The
chats’ territories were centered there. I have seen Mountain Quail there in
the past, which was our reason for being there. There were a lot of birds
generally at that location.
2 breeding plumage Greater Yellowlegs were just off Rentenaar Rd. on Sauvie’s
Island feeding in a shallow flooded field.
