Hi all,

I have been to the Malheur Field station twice in the past week, including
yesterday. There is good news, bad news, and perhaps some ugly news with a
silver lining.

To the good news first--there is no evidence that the MFS has been, or
currently is occupied by the Bundy thugs. On my first visit (last Tuesday
the 19th) no one was in sight, and no apparent damage. On my second visit
(yesterday), there were 4 or 5 people doing target practice on the
premises, but they scooted out quickly after I pointed out the Field
Station was a private educational center, not funded by the government.

Now to the bad news--one of the houses (the rental west of the manager's
house) had been broken in to, causing significant damage to the back door.
The militia guy denied having broken in and offered to repair the damage
(like I could give permission??), though suspiciously they had hauled out
some of the furniture to hold up their targets. They returned the furniture
back to the house before leaving. Except for the furniture, which they put
back into the house, nothing appeared to be stolen.

And finally the ugly news. The field station is in a very precarious
position. Without an extra boost, it will be in serious trouble. First, the
refuge is operating on a shoestring budget. Nearly every building is in
dire need of exterior paint. On top of that, groups that reserved space
have been cancelling their reservations and asking for their deposits back.
Without support, it could take negative spiral--i.e. too little funds to
keep it in good enough condition to attract people and
programs. Disclaimer-I am not a board member or have any financial interest
in the field station, but I do want to see it remain and thrive. It serves
an important function!

Silver lining? Well, I trust that there are enough people who care about
MFS that they will provide funding and/or volunteer help to restore what
the Bundites have taken away.

Cheers,

Craig Miller
