And here (from my days in Sunday School) I was given to believe that the
operative verse was,
"And God so loved the WORLD that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting
life." (John 3:16).
As a born and raised Lutheran, it strikes me as blasphemy that someone
would substitute "gays and lesbians" in place of "world" into one of the
most beloved and important verses of the New Testament.
The whole thrust of the New Testament, at least as I was taught, is that
everyone is a sinner, and that Jesus Christ died for the sins of all
humanity. This tract seems to pile all of that guilt, and the weight of
the crucifixion, on gays and lesbians alone.
As a lapsed Lutheran (once raised as a Lutheran, you can never be
anything else) I'm offended by the bad theology of this tract, almost as
much as by the insult implied by shoving this into the hands of a
well-known gay couple.
