If the Legislature wants to show school children who is really in charge (not
the people), then officially make it make it the western meadowlark. BTW, do
you even know what the Osprey is and why it should be the official state bird?
Thank you.

Dear Mr. Stone,
Thank you for writing to Representative Nathanson regarding Oregon’s state
bird.
The Meadowlark has been the "de facto" state bird since it was chosen by
school children and declared in a Proclamation by Governor Paterson in 1927.
The Legislature now has a chance to decide officially on the status of a
state bird.
A bill recently passed by the Senate, SCR 18, would officially designate the
osprey, instead, as the state bird. It is currently in the House Committee on
Rules and has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing. Representative
Nathanson will keep your views in mind should the bill progress and come to a
vote in the House.
Once again, thank you for contacting Representative Nathanson. If you would

Subject: State bird
Rep Nathanson,
Please vote against SCR 18, the wrong-headed, personal resolution of Senator
Girod.
The current State Bird - Western Meadowlark, was once common throughout
Oregon, picked by Oregon Oregon schoolchildren in 1927, is in serious
decline, currently listed as a sensitive species and beloved by birders
throughout Oregon. In Eugene, there are even two popular birding sites named
"Meadowlark Prairie".
While this might seem like a trivial issue, Senator Girod has taken it upon
himself to propose this change with no public support and two people speaking
in opposition.
With all the crucial issues for the Legislature to consider, it is puzzling
why he (and the Legislature) should even spend time on an issue that no one
in the state except Sen Girod wants.
Please vote No on SR 18.
Thank you.
