Speaking as the MidValley Birding list monitor, I can say we have no
rule to expressly forbid "political" content particularly when it
relates to bird habitat, bird conservation, and other birding-related
issues.
There have been several postings about rallies and other Malheur-related
topics. No one has grumbled about them yet -- even though I personally
know of several card-carrying Tea Party members on the list who are no
doubt sympathetic to the general ideas behind the "sagebrush rebellion."
I'd just ask folks to please try to keep things relevant for a local
list. Plans for rallies in Salem, Corvallis, or Eugene would make sense,
but probably not plans for a rally in Pendleton or Boise. Very few
mid-valley list subscribers live in Greg Walden's district, so it would
be fairly pointless to urge people to vote against him via this list,
etc.
Also please keep in mind that -- from a pragmatic standpoint -- if you
annoy people by posting too often or too stridently without much
attention to other ongoing threads, you might end up with the opposite
result that you were hoping for. It's just as easy to generate antipathy
as sympathy.
For other local birding lists, I'd encourage folks to contact the
moderators if unsure of their policy. For the Central Oregon list
(COBOL), the moderator has shown a willingness to bend the rules a tad
and forward some postings about Malheur, if he's approached politely.
