Hi all,

I have a different view on this. I think it's good to make it clear that
the birding community as a whole supports inclusivity and respect for
people regardless of gender/orientation. But it's important to model
inclusivity as well as to preach it.

Oscar did not choose to "out" this individual, but instead called
attention to the behavior that was offensive. I thought that was a
dignified response to the situation.

I have known a lot of evangelical Christians in my life and the reality
is far more complicated than can be boiled down to a simple formula.
Some of them have been accepting of my one kid who is gay, and another
one who is "cis" but chooses to present in a way that is at odds with
gender stereotypes. Others have been less accepting.

I have also known some non-evangelical and/or non-Christian people who
"present" as liberals but seem to have a really hard time dealing with
their kids who are gay/lesbian, transgender, or "non-binary." Over the
holidays we had a couple of young people visiting our house and staying
for a few days, because they felt more comfortable here than with their
parents. One of them comes from a fundamentalist Christian household,
the other one comes from a very liberal household where the parents just
can't accept their kids's orientation. Either way it's sad to see
parents who are unwilling to accept their kids.

I have little hope that the person(s) who tried to foist their views on
Oscar and Hendrik will ever change their world view, in which gay people
are sinners who need to be "saved," and their version of religion tells
them that they are obligated to try to save them. But I doubt it will
help at all to ostracize them completely from a community that currently
might be their only exposure to other world views. Hounding such people
out of the birding community will just cause them to retrench among
people who share their views.
