Craig Miller just photographed an odd blackbird at Malheur HQ. It appears
to be a Red-winged without any wing patches. Does anyone have any other
ideas or has anyone seen anything like this?
Thanks,
Tom Crabtree, Bend

Hi Tom,
I'm looking at what I think is a Red-winged Blackbird (left in back of
photo), but it doesn't have wing patches. Maybe a melanistic bird, or am I
forgetting a common trait?
It has brownish-tinged feathers, shiny black back and head, black eyes, and
bill the same shape as Red-winged Blackbird. It is larger than Brown-headed
Cowbird, and bill is not nearly as conical.
I'm at Malheur HQ.
I'd appreciate any input. I've got much better pictures on my camera.
Craig
