The Occupation of the Malheur Refuge:
I grew up in Connecticut. Connecticut is 3.5 million acres. Oregon is over
62 million acres, the 9th largest state. The national press from New York
and Washington often don’t understand how really big it is out here in
Oregon. Much of the land in the state of Oregon, especially outside the
wetter, more heavily inhabited areas, near Portland, Eugene and the coast,
are under the management of the Forest Service and Bureau of Land
Management. Those land’s resources and preservation of natural areas and
wildlife serve us all.

The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge buildings are occupied by a group of
armed people. They have a right to protest but they need put down their
arms and to leave!

This wildlife refuge was established by Teddy Roosevelt. . The Malheur
refuge is essential to the international flyways that ducks, geese and
other birds use. If anyone has ownership it is the Paiute tribe (includes a
sacred site and they aid in maintaining it), and the ducks, herons, and
other birds to whom it is essential. And, to a degree it is owned by each
of us who are US citizens. There is no doubt that the local citizens of
Harney County have a bigger interest than most of us in knowing that the
Malheur Refuge is managed well for the intended purposes, and that their
own needs, as neighbors, are taken in to account.

However, the Bundy group are just wrong. The Hammond’s who they claim to be
defending did commit arson that burned 139 acres. This wasn’t a trash burn
getting out of hand. 139 acres is about the area of the main part of the
National Mall in Washington, between the Capitol steps to the Washington
Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. Imagine what sentences might be issued if
someone destroyed that entire area.

The biggest problem for states like Oregon with large Federal land
holdings, has been the stripping of resources for profit over the last two
centuries, and the failure of Congress to adequately compensate those
states and local communities for the fact that the Federal lands don’t
contribute to their taxes. The Republicans in Congress have consistently
reduced funds that these local communities received as compensation for
timber harvest and other uses that we all benefit from, resulting in
communities having to close libraries and reduce services their citizens
need.

There is no justification for more private ownership of public wildlife
refuges. Private owners would simply destroy them, for profit.

See the attached article from the Oregonian about the individuals who
actually care for the Malheur Wildlife refuge, and the links below to
understand what it really means to protect the land of the United States.
