Hello All,
We were taken back (to say the least) at the total cut-down of Oregon White Oak
up at the Ankeny NWR Overlook at noon today. A guy came up to me and said, "My
fiance and I see this as a special place for us and it's all cut down." I told
him I was a member of Salem Audubon and was not a happy camper myself. ALL of
the Oregon White Oak cut down and some of the stumps seemed healthy. Some pine
trees remain.
The big tree was over 150 years old. You plant one now and you'll have to wait
until (2016 +150= 2176) to get that tree or one like it. Good luck. I have a
photo of the stump. Local group wanted photo of standing tree for posterity.
We have a lot of friends in Salem Audubon and respect them dearly. We are
nobody with no voice to speak of. We do donate to several Audubon societies and
I snarky told Pam that we had probably paid for the big tree coming down with
our measly donations, But... this reminded me of GE's old ad that said
"Progress is our most important product." Uh, huh. As Joni Mitchell said,
"Paved paradise and put up a parking lot."
This time it's a Nature Center.
