Don,
a close friend of mine says he knows you (Mike Kaleel). He use to run a blue
Lotus 23b at the Historics/Pre-historics, in your run group. But he sold his
23, and currently brings a Lola Mk1 out there every August.
Good to hear about your experiences with the various sanctioning bodies. I
guess I’m over thinking things (can you tell I’m an engineer and not a business
person?).
If I get hassled I’ll tell Tony Parella to talk to you…

I've been running aftermarket 4 piston calipers on my Bobsy-Porsche SR3 for
24 years, and nobody has bothered me.
I documented that the Airheart calipers were 4 piston calipers, with 1.75"
pistons, which is what I'm using in the custom aftermarket calipers.
SVRA, HSR, HMSA, CSRG, etc. ALL have not questioned my calipers.
I had some CNC brand calipers, but replaced them with Wilwoods years ago,
WITHOUT any Wilwood name on them.
Running 50 year old calipers might be inadequate, even if rebuilt and in good
working order, depending on what engine you're running.
I've found that the most important factor in not running out of brakes is
getting sufficient air duct cooling to the discs.
I started with 2.5" ducts front and rear and would regularly fade them, even
with 600 degree fluid.
I went to 3" front ducts which helped, but still occasional fading.
Then I added the ducting cans over the discs, as described in Carrol Smith's
Prepare to Win, and now I never fade the brakes, and only bleed them prior to
each weekend.

Thanks for the info and suggestions.
While a 175x1 is probably adequate in the rear for an SR3, pictures of this
Beach from 30 years ago clearly show 175x2’s on the rear. The original
literature suggests same sized brakes fire and aft. So, 175x2’s in the rear
is original as far as I know.
On a whim I searched Facebook and found a fellow with a good selection of
old airheart calipers, including a 175x2 and 175x1’s. But they are pretty
expensive, similar to brand new new Girling calipers BEFORE factoring in
resleeve/rebuild costs.
Finally, Ron Mong mentioned to me that using old and unknown brake calipers
is not always the smart choice on a race car. He is a professional so I
have a request into SVRA to see if they will allow a new vintage style
Girling caliper with the same pad area.
How many of you are racing on 50 year old brake calipers?

John, Just as Mike suggested, Speedway has pads listed in their catalog.

Hi John,
175X2 Airhearts were used on the front of my Bobsy (clone) and my Quasar
back in the day. Airheart 175X1s were used in back. Airhearts were
used a lot for circle track midget cars. I found replacement rebuild
kits and replacement pads (front) and pucks (rear) from circle track
racing suppliers. Later, I had White Post restorations re-line the
worn-out bores in the calipers. They never leaked afterwards. You may
be able to find complete brakes from circle track suppliers. I’ve been
away from racing for some years, but check Speedway motors and try to
talk to circle track midget guys for possible sources.
Good luck with your racing,

Guys, this last winter I was seriously thinking about buying Jeff
McKay's beautiful SR3, but ended up getting a Beach Mk4b instead. The
Beach was NOT the smart buy as condition was no where near as good as
Jeff's well priced priced SR3. Had I twice as much $, I would have
bought both ;-)
I'm hoping you guys will take mercy on me for not buying Jeff's car, and
give me some leads on brake calipers.
The Beach used Airheart brake calipers back in the day, like Bobsy's and
other American sports racers in the 60's and early 70's. Unfortunately,
my Beach showed up with Wilwoods on the rear, even though the FS photos
all showed Airhearts 175x2 calipers.
So, I am seeking a pair of 175x2 (4 pads per caliper) for this Beach.
Thank you for any leads.
