Report from Julie Wright on rifles incidents and update on axe range.
With regards to the rifles. I’ll be happy with what you decide at the
meeting. I know of at least one site that don’t allow Beavers and Cubs to
take part in rifle shooting stating that if they cannot cock their own
rifles they are too young.
Choices in my opinion:-
1; purchase some smaller, lighter rifles for younger sections (if there are
any). We already have smaller bows for archery.
2; don’t allow younger sections to take part.
3; look at purchasing a different type of rifle (CO2 powered or similar).

Hi Steve
Following my Rifle session a week ago, would you please be able to bring
the following up at the meeting this evening
Julie had a group of cubs for Shooting for 2 hours
The Cubs struggle to cock the guns and hold the guns to bring the barrel
back up after entering the pellet.
The problem they have is they can not hold the gun nearer the trigger as
they feel they have no support and as the guns are heavy tend to put their
hands nearer the barrel and then have the danger of catching their hands
when the barrel is brought back up.
We had a small accident of this kind on this day (all in accident book and
reported and followed up with leader after) and since then I have found out
there was an accident a couple of weeks before.
I am worried that we are having a few accidents with the younger sections
due to the guns being too heavy and too long.
Would it be an investment to buy a couple of smaller , less heavy guns for
the younger sections to use so they enjoy the activity as much as the older
sections and feel they are able to cock their own guns and feel a sense of
achievement.
Axes and Axe Range
Further to my conversation with a couple of you, I am warden on site in
July and myself and Micheal plan to look at netting to go behind the range
and install/Start the weekend we are there (12/13)
This will be a curtain pully system as we are aware we can not leave
netting up due to our wildlife on site.
I will give an update on this nearer the time
