To clarify for others on this list. I had king 10. I bet preflop.
Two people called. Flop came down 9 spades, queen diamonds, and jack
diamonds. At this point I have the best hand on the board. My
opponent raises the pot, like 300. Another one calls. I reraise over
top when it gets to me. One opponent folds, and the other one goes
all in over top of my raise. It's still flop, and at this point I
still have the best hand. I call. Showdown comes, turn was a heart,
and he got a diamond on river. The whole point of me raising over him
was to stop chasing. So should I have played it differently, more
passively?

on turn or on the river.
This is one of the most difficult spots, and thus many players make big
mistakes in such spots.
I will begin with example:
You raise from cut off, button calls. Flop is Ace club, Ten club, 3
diamond.
On this flop, i would bet for value ace jack and better hands.
Considering
that we play out of position we should put some weak top pairs and medium
pairs in check range, as well as top set and top two pairs.
Turn comes 4 club.
Now flushes are possible for both us and opponent. When flush completes
opponent has usually around 15-20% flush hands in range, which is quite
often. Most of good opponents will defend vs turn bet only with top pairs
with flush draw and better hands and vs river bet they would defend 2
pairs
and better. This is why you can't any more value bet
strong top pair hands. 2 pairs is also not a good hand anymore, set or a
straight is medium value hand. I would in this spot value bet only flush
hands, and would check all weaker. As bluff i would continue bluffing
with
any flush draw.
If you check turn and opponent also checks turn, then on river you can
value bet your strong top pairs and better hand because opponent mostly
bets strong hands and check weak hands.
If opponent bets turn, you can call strong top pair and better hands, and
even weak top pairs with flush draw. If opponent bets turn and river, you
should
defend only 2 pairs and better hands.
also it is important to understand that low flush, like for example 5
club
6 club, is good enough to value bet, but you shouldn't raise low flushes
vs
bet, only call vs bet. You should raise only king high flushes and ace
high
flushes meaning nut flush and 2nd nut flush.
Conclusion:
When flush completes on turn or river, your strong top pairs, two pairs,
sets, straights are not anymore strong value hands and should be played
passively.
