Galway City Tribune, Ireland Friday, October 05, 2007 Visually impaired Galwaymen launch Activities Club Tom's vision for an active cycling club The first time Tom Langan set off on a tandem bike he was petrified. Tom is visually impaired and had not been on a bicycle since he was a young lad, when he had partial sight and was able to learn how to cycle. With a 'pilot' leading the way up front, the pair travelled from Galway to Maree, Oranmore. "Scary" is the first word that came to mind when Tom recalled that inaugural journey. "I suppose the experience as a youngster helped me a bit in that I knew the motion of a bike. But the knuckles were a bit white," he remembers with a chuckle. Despite the nerves, it was exhilarating and so far he has completed three rides. "Feeling the air, the movement of the air and feeling it on your face, to be out in nature and feeling it around you. I loved it," he recalls. Tom and two other men with the same disability, Michael Kelly and Paul Joyce, have launched the Galway Visually Impaired Activities Club and the first activity they want to get off the ground is tandem cycling.
