Every minute of every day, another child is struck by blindness.

Even though half the cases are preventable or treatable, childhood blindness is
a growing blight and in developing countries, an estimated 60 per cent of
afflicted children will die.

This week, a photographic exhibition based on the work of the Fred Hollows
Foundation is being held at the Rocks as part of World Sight Day on October 11.

"Saving the sight of a child is literally the gift of a lifetime," Gabi
Hollows, founding director of The Fred Hollows Foundation, said. She said that
of the children who survived turning blind, the remainder were expected to
spend an average of 40 years without sight.

"When you give sight to a child, you save them from a lifetime of hardship,"
Mrs Hollows said. "The operation to reverse cataract blindness can cost as
little as $25 in some developing countries."

The exhibition features the work of photographers Michael Amendolia, Lannon
Harley and Hugh Rutherford and will run until Thursday. All photos are for
sale, with proceeds going towards the fight against avoidable blindness.

The exhibition is at Saatchi & Saatchi, 70 George Street, The Rocks.
