Belfast Telegraph, Northern Ireland Wednesday, October 17, 2007 Football: Northern Ireland Visual Impairment Squad win inaugural Primary Cup Conor spot on for visually impaired side The Northern Ireland Visual Impairment Squad won the inaugural Primary Cup held by the English based Football Association for the Visually Impaired. This indoor five-a-side competition took place at the Sobell Leisure Centre in Islington, London at the weekend. The Northern Ireland squad defeated Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur and Thames Hamlett along the way. Special mention goes to two of the younger players who made a huge impact on the day. Fifteen-year-old Luke Walsh of Belfast scored a quick fire hat-trick in the semi-final to help the lads to a fine 5-2 win against Swansea and 16-year-old Conor Thompson, who scored the winner in the final from the penalty spot with the match tied at 2-2. The squad is coached by Alan Crooks and Mal Donaghy of the IFA Disability Football department. Donaghy said: "It was a brilliant performance by the whole squad - to go over to England and win the competition against such tough opposition is a tremendous achievement. "The young lads, Luke Walsh and Conor Thompson, did extremely well but this was very much a team effort and both myself and Alan Crooks are so proud to be involved with the team. "It's great for all of them and it's a great fillip for the IFA too." The IFA Visual Impairment programme is kindly sponsored by RNIB Northern Ireland.
