Melbourne Herald Sun, Australia Monday, October 15, 2007 Danijela gives blindness a caning By Grant McArthur WITH a friend like Natalie to lead her every step, Danijela Zebic has the confidence to take all before her. "Natalie" is the name the blind six-year-old has given her white cane. Yesterday she made another friend in Vision Australia ambassador Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, and had no problems finding her way around Cruden Farm to launch the Have Cane, Am Able Initiative. Danijela said Natalie helped her enjoy prep. "It helps me find things on the ground. We look for drains and trees and concrete paths," she said. "Sometimes it takes a while to find things with my cane, but I am getting better." Each year, Vision Australia trains more than 600 Victorian children to use white canes so they can travel safely and independently. Dame Elisabeth urged support for the initiative aimed at raising $150,000. "It is very inspiring for me to be in touch with people who can't see. They seem to have something extra, some wonderful strength of force within themselves, and it is a privilege for us to be able to support them," she said.
