Liverpool Echo (UK) Monday, October 08, 2007 CRIME: Woman, 84, forced from home by con By Luke Traynor AN ELDERLY charity volunteer has been forced from her home after falling victim to a doorstep conman. The 84-year-old, who is visually impaired, answered a knock at the door to find a man posing as a milkman. He left after a brief conversation and later when she checked her handbag, which was hanging over her walking frame, her cash cards were gone. The thief withdrew £900 from her accounts using one bank card and one building society card. The Runcorn woman is now so afraid that she has left her home and moved out of the area. Her daughter said: "I am absolutely sickened and disgusted by this. My mother has gone from being a confident, outgoing woman who was very independent to being no longer comfortable in her own home. She has lived in that area of Runcorn all her life and is now too scared to be there. "During that time she has played a large role in raising money for various charities. It is sad that this is how society has repaid her." Police say there has been spate of similar incidents in Runcorn and Widnes over the past few months. Det insp Pete Shaw, of Cheshire police, said: "These offenders have stooped to the lowest levels possible and words cannot describe their despicable behaviour. "They have preyed on the elderly, infirm and most vulnerable. "To single out these people is a horrible and cowardly act." Anyone with information should call police on 0845 458 0000 or Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111. luketraynor@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2007/10/08/woman-84-forced-from-home-by-con-100252-19912330/ BlindNews Mailing List Subscribe: BlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "subscribe" as subject Unsubscribe: BlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe" as subject Moderator: BlindNews-Moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Archive: http://GeoffAndWen.com/blind RSS: http://GeoffAndWen.com/BlindNewsRSS.asp More information about RSS feeds will be published shortly.
