[blindeudora] eudora announcing messages

I am writing on behalf of a friend.
He is trying to help a friend of his.
They both run eudora 7 and JAWS 8 with windows XP.
The messages downloading with eudora are not being announced though
and they cannot figure out why.
This person would like to hear the number of messages downloading.
Is there any setting they may have missed?
They have done the control shift d for enabling status but it still
does not work on the other person's computer. The guy helping her
says that his settings are pretty much the same..
Any help would be appreciated.
