When you watch the video on how to make this recipe, the guy has already seperated the onion into rings and places them on the lined cookie sheet. I guess you're right that you could just slice them and place them on the sheet, but I generally seperate mine and them place them. I almost never use white onions as I find they're much too harsh and not very sweet. I prefer the Spanish or yellow onions for most of my cooking.

As far as slicing the onion into rings, I first slice each end off
the onion, peel it, then slice into rings about a quarter inch thick
or so. It is then an easy matter to go in and seperate the rings by
hand. John, you say you separate the rings. when you  cut them into
circles, the small rings are already inside the large ones. do you
just loosen them leaving the whole circle intact,  do you use white
onions. thanks, from Mack
