I heard that the Icons cost way more than that, around $1,500!

Yes, I too like the old decktalk and eleq voices. I have just purchased an 8525 PDA (it was a Cngular 8525 when I got it back in January from the Cingular/att store). I have tried MSP for one month and really like it. I too tried to install a trial version of Pocket Hall and it did something to my Os and I had to take it back to ATT to get it reinstalled. I don't know what happened. Anyway, I think I'll get the MSP now, as it seems to do what I look.

I would, however, like to know how to install and use the Stowaway keyboard. I got one from JR music, but never have been able to use. I finally learned how to connect a bluetooth headset. I use a one-ear one; however, I'd like to use a stereo ()two-ear) set. What are some good ones?

Anyway, the one thing about these phone/pda screen readers is the big price. I payed around $400 - $50 rebate for my phone and, the last I looked, MSP cost around $599, much more than the phone. I know those Code Factory people have to make money, but couldn't they do something about the phone. I could buy a notebook for that price. Anyway, despite the price, it is good, but I must save up a little to get it.

Anyway, thanks very much or your info on this product.

I remember being scared, (when i was 3 years old) of a friend of mine's speach synthesiser, that was used because he wasn't able to use his normal vocal cords, and it sounded the same way the echo sounded back in those days.
After i found out it wasn't gonna hurt me, i was fine with it lol.
But i didn't know where the obnoctious voice was coming from.
Brings back lots and lots of memories.

I'm with you. First PC was an 8088 with two floppies and no HD using Sonix TTS and Artic Vision. I did however have a lightning-fast 1200 baud modem but had to make due with BBSes cause there was no Internet. Anyway, Fonix doesn't bother me at all. I think it's great to have access to my cell phone. Thanks for a trip down memory lane.

These, of course, came from the early 80's, and sounded like a robot in

Has anyone using the Fonix version for US noticed a hint of a Spanish

had a very slight accent not noticed on any other Fonix implementation I

Funny that you say that... I am just trying a 30-day license of
Mobilespeak on my Nokia N95, since it's the only player in town, and
find that all those Akoppelas do not compare to Eloquence.
First of all, they are slower, in my opinion, and second, they exagerate
speech to much, thus making it difficult to operate the phone.
I wonder why Code Factory decided to abandon Eloquence TTS.

I have been showing my 8525 to various blind people since I'm a new

Code Factory has made these devices.
Veteran synthesized speech users as well as newbies agree that the
speech makes MSP a less than appealing solution. In fact, many seem
to become completely disinterested in all the rest of the
demonstration after they hear the Fonix speech. It seems that
everybody wants Eloquence. I truly believe Code Factory could sell

I have tried to condition myself to Fonix but I have to admit that

I generally use arate of 19.
I frequently have to go back and review words I did not understand.
I use eloquence at a much faster rate (75 percent of maximum with JAWS

I have seen arguments on this list about the responsiveness of
Fonix. I support those who contend that it is not very responsive.
It is difficult to provide support for that argument since there are
many factors to consider including the device and the screen reader.
How are we to know how responsive Eloquence would be with MSP if we

I don't know how to qualify it except to say I suspect it would be

I didn't listen to the entire podcast but skimmed through it and

I was forced to do so a couple of weeks ago when the front keyboard
on my 8525 stopped working.
I have since received a replacement and it is working fine. I have
continued the habit of using the soft keys on the QWERTY keyboard when

it is open. For a long time I did not realize that those keys were
actually keys. I thought they were part of the communication that
must occur to let the device know when the keyboard is opened and
closed. They are a little awkward to press at first but they work
very well.

Hey, you all. I've done some tweaking, and feedburner will now download my
podcast properly if you're using Juice or Winamp or any other podcatching
client. Thanks so much to Scott R for letting me know that he couldn't get it. I couldn't either, Scott, until I did a little adjusting a few minutes ago, and it's working as I write this one. Also, the sound is pretty bad, people. I used SoundForge and had a wonderful thing going. However, I then
opened Goldwave to do some final editing, and it all went downhill from
there. The compression pre-set that I used totally messed things up, and I didn't realize it until I had already saved the thing. Why? Well it sounds ok to my half-deaf ears using everything but Winamp. I learned the horrible truth when I loaded it up in Winamp, so there you go. Also, this is podcast 34, a fact that I never allude to except for making a wise crack at the very
beginning of the show. Yes, I use all my usual weird sense of humor all
through this thing, so get ready. My veteran listeners are used to it.
They know I wouldn't hurt a flea, even if that flea uses Goldwave. I know
it is operator error, but Goldwave, which I was trying yet again for the
umpteenth time, is gone from my system, again for the umpteenth time. Ok, enough. Listen, enjoy, and criticize. That's what we as blind people do,
right? Have fun!

Ed,

Yes, I sure do remember the Echo, the Cricket, and that horrible Votrax.
Despite their sound, I used to use the Echo cranked up to its fastest speed
and had no trouble understanding it.

Today, many many many years later (grin) I can't stand running speech at
full speed because it makes me nervous. (lol) Like you said, even the
Fonix Dectalk sounds like heaven compared to what we had back then.

In fact, I remember your name from the Apple days. I think you had written
a couple of list programs. I used to write the Prokey macros for
ScreenTalk. (smile)

Yes, I like Smart Hal as well except for the fact that is does not work well with Microsoft's Voice Command. I am a huge fan of Voice Command and use it
regularly. I informed the tech support people about it at Dolphin.

By the way, Windows Mobile 6 comes with Voice Command. There is no need to

Hi All

I would just like to chip in on the eloquence debate. I have a licence for
MSS as this was the only player several months back but I was also not
really enjoying the voice. I recently trialed Smart Hal which has the
eloquence voices and I liked it so much I bought the product. On the
battery life i find i actually get a longer time between charges than with
MSS. I also dont get any crashes when coming out of having the keypad
locked nor do i seem to have any random crashes from time to time. Now to
keep this a fair comment I would like to point out that MSS is probably a
more feature rich product that works slightly better on the web and has more

configuration options but the voice was just killing me. Smart Hal works
very well with the phone contacts and messaging and I would suggest anyone with a smart phone gives it a go. They offer a 30 day trial as well. I am
using an O2 Graphite by the way.

Please dont take this as a direct criticism of MSS which it is not I am
merely pointing out an alternative to people who are having problems with
the voice. I would be back to MSS in a flash if they got eloquence as an
option.

Cheers for now

Hamish

Hi Victor,

CodeFactory decided to abandon Eloquence TTS cuz many users were
experiencing the problem of battery running out too fast. It seemed that
Eloquence drains out the battery very fast. I experienced the same
problem
myself when I was using Mobile Speak on the Symbian Phone about 2 or 3
years
ago. There might be other reasons too which only CodeFactory knows why.

Rahim

argument since there are many factors to consider including
the device and the screen reader. How are we to know how
responsive Eloquence would be with MSP if we haven't used it?
I don't know how to qualify it except to say I suspect it
would be bettter.

I didn't listen to the entire podcast but skimmed through it
and wanted to let you know that the keys above the QWERTY
keyboard are the left and right soft keys in case you want to
use them in the future. I was forced to do so a couple of
weeks ago when the front keyboard on my 8525 stopped working.
I have since received a replacement and it is working fine. I
have continued the habit of using the soft keys on the QWERTY
keyboard when it is open. For a long time I did not realize
that those keys were actually keys. I thought they were part
of the communication that must occur to let the device know
when the keyboard is opened and closed. They are a little
awkward to press at first but they work very well.

Easy, easy, easy, Scott.

There is no need to get rude. I, for one, have enjoyed reading everyone's
opinion on this subject. It does not matter whether or not MSS will
incorporate one TTS over another. The important thing is that we are a
community of differing opinions.

Have a happy day, OK?

Most Sincerely,

M*rk

Ok firstly all we are fully aware some people like the dectalk ppphonix
speech and others like eloquence.

Due to scansoft owning the eloquence speech and code factory having to
license it from them, it's not going to happen anytime soon if at all.

I'll let a code factory staff member answer this one but from what I was
told there will be no more eloquence running on code factory products for
new users.

Secondly lets stop the constant bitching and wining concerning dectalk and
eloquence speech. Nothing any of us say will change anything so just live
with it folks.
If you really want eloquence speech then look at another compeditors product

you all know the 2 compeditors i'm referring too.

Sorry, I'll take Phoenix Dectalk any day before Eloquence, which is
slower, more likely to crash, and really boaring compaired to Phoenix
Dectalk.

: Yes I am young (28) years old but know very well what your referring to
when

get
: use to a better clearer voice you find it kind of difficult to go back. : ----- Original Message ----- : From: "Marquette, Ed" <emarquette@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
