Hey there, Byron. Uh, no way is that true. I use the UMS firmware on every podcast, and I certainly record directly to MP3. No hacks necessary! The Iriver site isn't too forthcoming, though, and this is the problem. You have to do some extensive research to find the UMS software for our units. I sincerely hope that helps!
