Once you have an ums version on your unit, then you don't need the software
to do the upgrades. I haven't had the version where you need the manager
software since just after I got my player.

Hey there, Deb,  as far as I remember the other software is the actual Audio
Manager.  You need this because it allows you to upgrade the firmware.  If
you don't have the software on your PC, you can't transfer files to and from
the unit and you can't upgrade the firmware.  That's why it must be on
there.
