I also feel strongly about the accessibility of so many hardware /
portable audio appliances.  One positive twist here is the RockBox
software at http://www.rockbox.org.  I mention this last bit because
perhaps their efforts could be promoted at the expo and push for ways
that more hardware vendors could support implementation of rockbox's
product by sharing or exposing their firmware environment to the public
or at least, the rockbox developers.  That might be the fastest track
currently to help get these units to be more accessibility.

I think on a different subject, one could promote the benifits of
podcasts to blind listeners and make this known to podcast producers out
there.  It certainly should make a good morall booster for them.
