Hi Dave,

I think you are on the right track. The mock web page is a good start and I
am sure you will get many suggestions on what to add.

Both freelists and Yahoo groups allow you to do the same things with
footers, web pages and member subscriptions. I don't think one is
necessarily easier or harder to use - than the other it is just what people
feel most comfortable with. Both lists allow people to simply reply to a
confirmation message to get subscribed and - that should be the main concern
- how easy is it for a new member to subscribe.

A couple of other comments:

When it comes to adding footers to list messages, it is better to keep it as
simple as possible. You may want to add information on how to send a message
to the list, how to unsubscribe and how to contact the list owner or
moderator. Also, a link to the Blind Diabetics web page would be useful. Any
more information than that may clutter up messages and add more work for the
moderator.

The idea about adding a page for web links and frequently asked questions is
a good idea. It might also be a good idea to create a page for the list
guidelines and tips for how to subscribe, unsubscribe and change other
settings.

Ryan

Subject: [blind_diabetics] Help build the list and more

Hello to Ryan, Vicki, and Ruth,

Well, as I stated on the blind-diabetics list, I am proceeding to create a
new list for all of us, and I plan to go about it slowly. Although the
subscribing method with freelists is a tiny bit confusing (to some more than
others), in the end I think it may be a better place to be. One thing I
really like, actually 2 things, are: One, the footer (the information that
appears at the bottom of each message) is completely customizable, which
means links and email addresses can be put there that would be totally
relevant to our group, and second, we can have a web site, that like the
footer, is completely customizable. And, one additional positive thing is
something that will help us out initially, and that is that the moderator
can add email addresses manually to subscribe people. Now, although a
little tedious, I don't anticipate this to be too difficult since there
aren't that many of us. If people were okay with it, they could be added in
less than 30 minutes and then it would just be a matter of everyone making
the adjustment in their address book.

Now, I would love to have help in creating a couple of things that will
enhance our group. First, we can have a link to a faq (frequently asked
questions) file that would be in the footer, thus always accessible by just
tabbing to it and hitting enter. I don't have such a document at hand, but
perhaps someone has seen a good list of something like this somewhere. Or,
perhaps someone wouldn't mind doing a little googling to find one. Next, I
would like to have suggestions about what to put on the web page. These
ideas can be anything related to blindness and/or diabetes. In the mock
page I already have started, for instance, I have a link to the Prodigy
site, along with a couple other links. So, if you have ideas, or even the
links, just pass them along to me. Here's the link to the web page as it
exists, but remember this is really just a mock site and will be much
improved in time:

//www.freelists.org/webpage/blind_diabetics

Finally, please be completely (and brutally) honest with me as we move
toward making a switch. If you don't like something, chances are someone
else will not either. Thanks for your help.

Dave
