Making Desktop icons, for programs and apps and other stuff
This is a text tutorial, provided freely by The W-10 and Jaws group, anyone may
freely share this file.

This text file is updated to the W-10 fall Creators update 1809.
The following sections are covered in this short text guide.
****How to put a shortcut to your user folders, on the Desktop.

****How to put a shortcut to your user folders, on the Desktop.
1. Windows key+M, go to the Desktop.
2. Highlight your, This PC Icon, Press Enter.
3. Go down to your, C: Drive, press Enter.
4. Go down to your, Users folder, press Enter.
5. Highlight your user folders, for example, Jim, press the Application key.
6. Go down to, Creat shortcut, press the Enter key.
7. You will get a message saying no shortcut can be created here, Create
shortcut on Desktop instead, press Enter.
Now you have a shortcut to all your user folders, on your Desktop, like,
Documents, Downloads, Music, Favorites, and OneDrive.
Now, when you are on the Desktop, and you want to go to your, User folders.
In my example, Just, Press the letter J, Enter on Jim, you will be in a list of
all your User folders on your computer.
****Making Program shortcut Icons, on your Desktop.
1. Press Enter on the Start button, or just press the Windows key.
2. Either press the up or down arrow key or Tab two times to, All Apps list box.
For example, making a shortcut for Word 2016.
3. After moving to the All Apps list box, Press the letter W, press the Down
arrow key to, Word 2016.
4. After highlighting Word 2016, Press the Applications key.
5. Go down to, More sub menu, press the Right arrow, Arrow down to, Open file
Location, press enter.
6. Again Press the Applications key, go down to, Send to, sub menu, Right arrow
one time.
7. Down arrow to, Desk Top create shortcut, press enter.
You now have a shortcut Icon for Word 2016 on your desk top.
You can do these same steps to creat desktop icons, for all the other programs
here under All Apps list box as well.
*Making a desktop icon for the Internet explorer browser.
1. Press enter on the Start button, or just press the Windows Key.
2. Either press the Up or Down Arrow key, or Tab two times to, All Apps list
box.
3. Press W, and arrow down to, Windows accessories folder collapsed, Press
Enter to expand.
4. Go down to, internet Explorer, just highlight it and do not press enter.
5. Press the Applications key.
6. Go down to, More sub menu, press the right arrow key.
7. Go down to, Open file location, press enter.
8. Again Press the Applications key.
9. Go down to, Send to sub menu, press the right arrow key.
10. Go down to, create a desktop shortcut, press enter.
Now you have a desktop icon for Internet explorer on your desktop.
****How to create a Desktop shortcut for a program in the All Apps list box.
Just Repeating my directions to make sure they are understood.
1. Press the Windows key, or press Enter on the Start button.
2. Either press the up or down arrow or Tab two times to the All Apps list box.
3. Find the program, which you want to make a Desktop shortcut for, remember,
press Enter to expand or collapse a Program category list while in the apps
view list box.
Reminder, you can use first letter navigation, as long as you have an app or
program starting with that letter.
4. With the Program highlighted, or selected, press the Application key.
5. Go down to, More sub menu, right arrow, go down to, Open file location,
press Enter.
6. Again Press the application key, arrow down to, Send to sub menu, Right
arrow one time.
7. Arrow down to, Desktop create shortcut, press Enter.
Now, you have put a program shortcut right on your desktop.
Repeat the above steps, for each program shortcut you wish to add to the
Desktop of your W-10 computer.
****How to create a desktop icon, for all the W-10 built-in app
For example: Calculator, groove music, and many more, including any you have
downloaded from the Microsoft store including some controls you can make short
cuts for as well.
Press Windows key+R, for the run dialog.
Type just, "shell:appsfolder", without the quotes, Press Enter on the ok button.
*Tip, when you first see this list of apps, tab to details radio button not
checked, make sure it says detail radio button checked.
Now shit+TAB two times back to the complete list of Apps on your computer.
You will be presented, with a list of W-10 built-in apps and controls,
including any you have downloaded from the Microsoft store, like the KNFB
reader.
For example, Arrow down to Calculator, and press the Applications key or press
Shift+F10.
Arrow down to, create Shortcut, press Enter.
When you press Enter, you will get the following message, that you can’t
create the shortcut there but you can create it on the desktop instead.
You are on the Yes button by default, so just press Enter, and the selected app
icon, shortcut will be placed on the desktop.
Do this for all the apps and controls, you wish to make a Desktop icon shortcut
for in W-10.
Press ALT+F4, to close this window, when you are done.
****Pinning the Control panel to the Taskbar or making a desktop shortcut for
the Control panel.
*In the W-10 Creators update, After pressing Windows key+X, there is no longer
a link for Programs & Features.
*Tip, So its a good idea to make a shortcut for the Control Panel on the
Taskbar or on your Desktop.
*Pinning the Control Panel to the Taskbar.
1. Press the Windows key.
2. Type control panel, Highlight Control Panel, Desktop app, do not press Enter.
3. Press the Applications key, Arrow down to pin to Taskbar, press Enter.
*Make a Desktop shortcut Icon for the Control panel.
1. Press the Windows key.
2. Type control panel, Highlight Control Panel, Desktop app, do not press Enter.
3. Press the Applications key, Arrow down to Open file location, press Enter.
4. Press the Applications key again, Arrow down to, Sent to sub menu, press the
Right arrow key.
5. Arrow Down to, Desktop Creat shortcut, press Enter.
*Tip, you can do it in the above way right from the start button search edit
box, to pin programs to the taskbar, or make desktop icons shortcuts for any
program.
*Tip, opening the Control Panel for the first time.
1. Tab one time to Categories, press the Spacebar.
2. Down arrow to Small Icons, press Enter.
3. Now close and open the Control panel, you will be in a grid with five
colums, of list items.
4. Programs & Features will be one of these items, first letter navigation
works in the Control Panel, when you use the Small icons view.
*Important items in the Control Panel are.
Security & maintenance
Device Manager.
Devices & Printers.
System.
Autoplay.
File Explorer Options.
Internet Options.
Sound.
Troubleshooting.
User Accounts, and many more.
All of these items are a link, just press Enter to open that part of the
Control panel.
*All member feedback, is encouraged by me about all my lessons.
*My purpose for developing all of this free material for the Blind computer
user is to help teach and assist a Blind person to use w-10 with a Screen reader
like Jaws.
*My hope is that the Blind computer user will grow in confidence, in their
ability, to use, and to navigate the w-10 computer system, using just Jaws.
*This is one of many tutorials, I hope to produce, for the Blind community, to
help teach all of them, how to use a W-10 computer using Jaws.
*My hope is , That over time, they would learn how to do, and complete, various
computer tasks in W-10, all by themselves.
