Customizing the Start button Area and the Taskbar in W-10
This is a text tutorial, provided freely by The W-10 and Jaws @groups.io,
anyone may freely share this file.

This text file is updated to the W-10 creators update 1809.
Below I show you how to Personalize your Start button Area and the Taskbar
area in W-10, for easier use with Jaws.
Press the Window key to open or close the Start button search edit box.
Just press the Windows key or press Enter on the Start button to get to the
Start area search edit box of W-10.
The Start area in W-10 is now divided into four sections.
1. The start button search edit box.
2. The Start list box.
3. The All Apps list box.
4. The Pinned Tiles list box.
*1. The start button search edit box.
Press the Windows key or press Enter on the Start button.
Start typing in an item you are searching for.
The list of results will start populating as you type, the more you type,
the fewer the choices will be listed for you.
Press the Down arrow to go down through the list of results, press the
Enter key on any item to open or start up that item.
*2. The Start list box.
Press the windows key, tab one time, down arrow one time.
You will hear, User Account, followed by your name, button.
Pressing the Application key on your Account picture icon here will bring
up a Context menu of the following items, Change Account settings, Lock, or
Sign out.
Now, when you down arrow from your Account picture, you will see different
items.
This depends on what buttons you have checked, or what folders, you have
checked in the Settings, Personalization, Start, in the settings area of
w-10.
Let’s go take a look at the options for the Start area in W-10.
1. Press Windows key+I, Opens the search edit box in the settings area, Tab
one time.
2. Right arrow to, Personalization, press the Spacebar or the Enter key,
Tab one time.
3. Arrow down to, Start, press the Spacebar or the Enter key.
4. Tab to, Show more tiles button checked, this will add more group header
groups to your live tile region.
5. Tab to, Occasionally show suggestions in Start button, press the
Spacebar to check or uncheck.
This means Microsoft can give you ads or suggestions for Apps and other
stuff, mine is unchecked.
6. Tab to, Show most used Apps button, Check or uncheck.
This will show your most used Apps, in the start area if this is checked,
mine is not checked.
7. Tab to, Show recently added Apps button, Checked or unchecked.
Any Apps you have downloaded lately, will show up at the top of the All
Apps list, if this is checked, mine is checked.
8. Tab to, Use Start full screen, Checked or unchecked.
This will make your Start screen look like w-8.1, good if you have a little
vision, mine is unchecked.
9. Tab to, Show recently opened items in jump list on Start or the Taskbar
button, Checked or unchecked, I have this checked.
10. Tab to, Choose what folders appear on Start Link, press Enter.
Tab across here, press the Spacebar to check the folders you wish to show
on Start.
This is a list of your choices, File Explorer, Settings, Documents,
Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, Home group, Network, and Personal
folder.
Check each folder, that you wish to appear under the Start list box, of
the Start area, I have documents, downloads, and personal folder checked.
They will appear under, the Start list box, the first tab from the search
edit box.
If you choose, Personal folder, This is a shortcut to, all your user
folders, very handy and quit way to go to all your personal folders.
*Tip, the power button is below these folders.
*3. All Apps list box.
From the second tab from the search edit box, or after pressing the Windows
key and pressing the up or down arrow, you land in the All Apps list box.
Pressing the Application key on just about any program or App, will give
you the option to pin to Start or pin to the taskbar.
So, Programs or Apps that you pin to Start, will show up under your group
headers, in the third tab from the search edit box, called, the pinned
Tiles list box.
You can totally personalize your Start button area, from the Start list box
shortcuts, to the All Apps list box, and the pinned tiles list box.
You can even change the name of the group headers, in the third tab from
the search edit box, called the pinned Tiles list box, to match your
interests.
*Customizing the All Apps list box and customizing the Taskbar for better
use with Jaws.
Press the Windows key, followed by Up or Down arrow to directly go to the
All Apps list box.
Or Press the Windows key, Tab two times to, the All Apps list box.
First letter navigation works as long as you have an app or program
starting with that letter.
If you want to uninstall, an unwanted app on your computer, do the
following.
Remember there are many built-in Apps in w-10 which you can’t uninstall,
so just turn them off under the background apps and turn off their live
tile.
1. Press the windows key or enter on the Start button.
2. Either press the up or down arrow keys, or Tab two times to, All Apps
list box.
3. Use first letter navigation, or Down arrow through the list of Apps, if
you find one you wish to uninstall, highlight the app and do this.
4. Press the Applications key, down arrow to, Uninstall, and press Enter,
press the Spacebar to confirm.
Many of these apps in the All Apps list box area, are built into the w-10
system, you will not be able to uninstall them, but you can turn their live
tile off, and turn them off in the Background Apps section of the Settings
area.
Example, Cortana, the Edge, Mail, Calendar, Calculator, Xbox, and many more.
*Pinning items to the Taskbar, and making desktop programs shortcuts in the
W-10 Creators update.
1. Press the Windows key, or Enter on the Start button.
2. Press the uparrow or downarrow to go directly to the All apps list box.
3. Use first letter navigation, or just Down arrow through all the apps and
programs on your computer, Highlight the App or the program that you want
to pin to the Taskbar.
4. Press the Application key, on any App or program, arrow down to, more
sub menu, right arrow one time, to pin to Taskbar, press enter to pin the
app or program to the taskbar .
Now your App or Program, has been pinned to the Taskbar.
5. If a group is collapsed, press enter key to expand, this is a toggle,
pressing enter Opens and closes a program group.
**For example, while in the All apps list box.
1. Press the letter O, for Outlook 2016.
2. Arrow down and highlight Outlook 2016.
3. Press the Application key.
4. Down arrow to the more sub menu, right arrow one time to, pin to
Taskbar, press enter.
Now, you have pinned Outlook 2016, to the Taskbar in W-10.
**another example, pinning the Control panel to the Taskbar.
1. Press the Windows key, or Enter on the Start button, press either
uparrow or downarrow , to go directly to the All apps list box.
2. Press the letter W, arrowdown and highlight, Windows system folder
collapsed, press Enter to expand.
3. Arrowdown two times and highlight, Control panel.
4. Press the applications key, Arrow down to more sub menu, right arrow to
pin to Taskbar, press Enter.
5. The Control panel, has now been pinned to the Taskbar in W-10.
*Tip, pinning the Control panel to the Taskbar is important, because of
easy shortcuts links, to Programs and features, Device manager, and Device
and printers and other stuff that are in the Control panel.
**Another example, Pinning Internet explorer and notepad to the Taskbar.
1. Press the Windows key, or Enter on the Start button, press either
uparrow or downarrow , to go directly to the All apps list box.
2. Press the letter W, Arrowdown to Windows accessories folder collapsed,
press Enter to expand.
3. Downarrow and highlight Internet explorer.
4. Press the applications key, arrowdown to more sub menu, rightarrow to
pin to Taskbar, press Enter.
5. you have now pinned Internet explorer, to the Taskbar in W-10.
6. From the All Apps list box, Press the letter W, Arrowdown to Windows
accessories folder collapsed, press Enter to expand.
7. Downarrow and highlight Notepad.
8. Press the Applications key, Downarrow to more sub menu, Rightarrow to
pin to Taskbar, press Enter.
9. You have now pinned Notepad to the Taskbar in W-10.
**Another example, pinning Jaws 17 and 18, or 2018, to the Taskbar in W-10.
1. Press the Windows key, or Enter on the Start button, press either
uparrow or downarrow , to go directly to the All apps list box.
2. Press the letter J, highlight the Jaws 17.0 folder collapsed, press
enter to expand.
3. Highlight the Jaws 17 folder.
4. Press the Applications key, Arrowdown to More sub menu, Rightarrow to
pin to Taskbar, press Enter.
5. You have now pinned Jaws 17 to the Taskbar in W-10.
6. From the All Apps list box, press the letter J.
7. Arrowdown to the Jaws 18.0 folder collapsed, press Enter to expand.
8. Highlight the Jaws 18 folder.
9. Press the Applications key, Arrowdown to more sub menu, Right arrow to,
Pin to Taskbar, press Enter.
10. You have now pinned Jaws 18 to the Taskbar in W-10. or you can do the
above steps to pin jaws 2018 to the task bar.
*Tip, I have Jaws 17, and Jaws 18, pinned on the Taskbar at 7 and 8, this
makes it much easier to change from Jaws 18 to Jaws 17 and back and forth.
**What is the order of the pinned items, on my Taskbar?
1. internet explorer.
2. Word 2016.
3. notepad.
4. outlook 2016.
5. control panel.
6. Windows defender security center.
7. Jaws 17.
8. Jaws 18.
9. iTunes.
**How to open all my pinned items on the Taskbar, in W-10 on my computer.
*Tip, you can pin items to your Taskbar in whatever order you wish.
If I want to open the first pinned item to my Taskbar which is Internet
explorer, press Windows key+1, on the numbers row to, open Internet
explorer.
Press Windows key+2, on the number row to, open Word 2016.
Press Windows key+3, on the numbers row to, open Notepad.
Press Windows key+4, on the numbers row to, open Outlook 2016.
Press Windows key+5, on the numbers row, to open Control panel.
Press Windows key+6, on the numbers row, to open the Windows defender
security center.
Press Windows key+7, on the numbers row to, start Jaws 17.
Press Windows key+8, on the numbers row to, start Jaws 18.
Press Windows key+9, on the numbers row to, open iTunes.
**Tip, I find using the above way with the Taskbar, to start up Jaws 17 and
start up Jaws 18 works the smoothest and best in W-10.
**If I am reading a notepad document, how do I open a blank notepad
document using the Taskbar?
On my computer I press Windows+Shift+3, and a new blank notepad document
opens.
**Making desktop shortcut icons, for your programs in W-10.
1. Press the Windows key, or Enter on the Start button, press either
uparrow or downarrow , to go directly to the All apps list box.
2. Use first letter navigation, Highlight the program you want to put a
Desktop shortcut icon to on your desktop.
3. Press the Applications key, arrowdown to more sub menu, rightarrow,
downarrow to Open file location, press Enter.
4. Press the Applications key again, Downarrow to, Send to sub menu,
Rightarrow, Downarrow to Desktop create shortcut, press Enter.
5. You have now made a desktop shortcut for that program, on your Desktop
in W-10.
**When in the All Apps list box, you can pin items to Start as well.
1. Highlight any App or Program, you wish to pin to Start.
2. Press the Applications key, Downarrow to, Pin to Start, press Enter.
You have now pinned your App or Program to the Start area Pinned Tiles list
box, under one of the group headers.
I personally do not pin a lot of items to Start.
I have my folder shortcuts under the Start list box, and many program
shortcuts on my desktop and also pinned to the Taskbar.
*4. The pinned tiles list box.
Pinned Tiles list box in W-10
1. Press enter on the start button, or just press the Windows key.
2. Either press Shift+Tab one time, or Tab three times to, Pinned Tiles
list box.
*Tip, You have what are called Group Headers not headings, under each group
header are various items pinned to Start.
*tip, Some of these items are what are called, live tiles, many of these
live tiles need to be turned off, read later on in this guide to see how to
turn them off.
3. You should hear, life at a glance or Play and Explore, group header.
Just use your down arrow keys or all four keys to move around the group
headers and highlight any pinned items you have pinned to start under each
group header.
4. If you wish to Change the name of a group header, for example, Just
highlight Life at a glance, Group header, press enter.
Backspace the whole name out, type the new name for the group header, press
enter.
5. Press the arrow keys, to find all the group headers, For example, my
Computer says, Watch ESPN, Group header, I have four items, pinned under
this header.
Some group headers may be side by side, use the right arrow to see the one
to the right.
My group headers are in a list of group headers followed by my pinned items
to start, under each Group Header.
6. From the selected header, down-arrow one time to the first App or
program or shortcut, pinned to start under this group header, you may have
to use the right and left arrow keys, if you have a lot of pinned items.
If this is an App you wish to turn off its live tile and then unpin from
the Start area, do the following
7. Press the Application key on each app you wish to turn off its live
tile, or unpin it from the Start area.
For example:
After you highlight, a certain live tile app, that you want to turn off.
Press the Application key, go down to, More sub menu, press the right arrow
key, you are on, Turn off live tile, Press enter, this will turn the live
tile off.
After turning the live tile off, press the Application key again, on the
same highlighted app, you land on, Unpin from start, press Enter to, Unpin
the same App from start.
this will remove the app or program, from the pinns tiles list box of the
Start area.
8. You can also resize each App, press the Application key on the
highlighted app, go down to, the Resize sub menu, press
the Right arrow key, You can choose from, Small, Medium, Wide, and Large.
Press the Enter key on your choice.
*How to change the name of Group Header list boxes in the Pinned Tiles
list box.
1. Press the Windows key or press enter on the start button.
2. Either Shift+Tab one time, or Tab three times to, the Pinned Tiles list
box, for example, find the group header called, Play and Explore group
header list box.
3. With this Header selected, same as highlighted, press the Enter key.
4. You will hear the name of this Group Header list box followed by Edit.
5. Press the backspace key until you clear out all the characters.
6. Type in your new name for this Header group, press enter.
7. For example, I called it News.
8. Now I hear, News Group Header list box.
*All member feedback, is encouraged by me about all my lessons.
*My purpose for developing all of this free material for the Blind computer
user is to help teach and assist a Blind person to use w-10 with a Screen
reader like Jaws.
*My hope is that the Blind computer user will grow in confidence, in their
ability, to use, and to navigate the w-10 computer system, using just Jaws.
*This is one of many tutorials, I hope to produce, for the Blind community,
to help teach all of them, how to use a W-10 computer using Jaws.
*My hope is , That over time, they would learn how to do, and complete,
various computer tasks in W-10, all by themselves.
