Got this from the Windows 10 list and wanted to pass it on.
Using the site: Operator to Laser-Focus Your Web Searches
Site: (the word "site" followed immediately by a colon after the final
'e') is one of the most useful operators for limiting your web searches
to a specific single website. It's especially handy when you know that
you’ve seen what you’re looking for on a specific site or know that an
online archive exists you’d like to search. The site: operator works
with every major web search engine I’m aware of, and the minor ones,
too, including Google, Yahoo, Ask, DuckDuckGo, and more.
It is incredibly simple to use. You simply include the text “site:”
without the quotes directly in front of the web address of the site you
wish to search. If you know that a site has various levels, and you
don’t want to search levels above a specific one, specify the address of
the level to start with. Good examples of this are online archives for
e-mail lists or online forums.
I participate in a number of discussion groups hosted by the Groups.io
website. Let’s say I’m trying to search the group message archive
regarding the NVDA screen reader for conversations about the “Windows 10
App Essentials” add-on. I would enter the following as my search criteria:
site: nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/topics “Windows 10 App Essentials”
You do not need to include, and should not include, the http:// part of
the web address, just the part to the site and specific level in the
site under which you want the search conducted. Also remember that if
you’re searching for a specific phrase like, “Windows 10 App
Essentials,” to enclose it in quotation marks or else your results will
be for anything that includes Windows or 10 or App or Essentials, which
will include lots of junk.
For members of the various Groups.io Groups related to blindness and low
vision technology here is a list of the Group Names along with the site:
operator you’d use to search that group's online archive along with your
other search criteria.
· Blind Technology site: groups.io/g/blindtech/topics
· JAWS For Windows site:
jfw.groups.io/g/main/topics
· NVDA site:
nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/topics
· Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users site:
win10.groups.io/g/win10/topics
If your search doesn’t return anything in one web search engine it’s
always worth trying it in another since different search engines crawl
different websites at different times, so what’s indexed at any moment
in time could be quite different if a website involves a lot of dynamic
content.
I have often found that using this operator with a regular web search
engine gets me more accurate results than the site’s own native search
feature does.
