Summary:
Provide and/or coordinate academic, technological and social instruction to support the educational programming and mobility of students who are blind or visually impaired from birth through 5.
Essential Functions:
Plan curriculum and prepare lessons and other instructional materials according to achievement levels of students
Observe, evaluate and prepare reports on progress of students
Provide basic instruction to students in accord with district and IU policy
Knowledge of Unified English Braille Code (UEB), Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) and experience with birth-21 population preferred.
Knowledge of and competence with technology for vision
Dual credential in Orientation and Mobility a plus, but not required to apply
Supervisory Responsibility: N/A
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands. The employee is frequently required to walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee may be required to stand for long periods, and to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Follow teacher's expected work hours. 193 day work year as assigned, hours in accordance with building/program needs. Hours are dependent on the needs of the districts. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel: Itinerant position requiring travel among student placements.
Education and Experience:
Level of Degree:
PDE credential as Teacher of Visually Impaired (TVI) PreK-12
Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) preferred but not required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the visual system, and sensory development, with a thorough understanding of prevalent diseases and disorders of the human visual system, including cerebral/cortical visual impairment.
Knowledge of physical and virtual environmental factors that impact acquisition of spatial and positional concepts as acquired through vision
Knowledge of evidence based practices for teaching students with visual impairments, to include proper use and care of braille and braille production technology and equipment
Possess dynamic knowledge of options for specialized assessment materials as well as knowledge of federal, state and local requirements for eligibility and timing of assessments
Awareness of tools and opportunities for professional development and ethical practice
Ability to read and interpret eye reports and to serve as liason to families and other members of the educational team in order to customize services and supports to students with visual impairments
Ability to select and administer assessments that address visual impairment, family values and priorities, prognosis and individual characteristics, then select, adapt and deploy strategies to address student needs
Use appropriate accommodations and modifications to optimize and facilitate sensory use and multisensory access to individual and group activities in general and expanded core curricular environments
Support orientation skills using environmental features, self advocacy for accommodations and modifications
Integrate principles of accessibility to select, create, adapt and format text, images and media to promote visability and accessibility to meet the individual needs of students with visual impairments
Plan and implement explicit instruction in assistive technology
Ability to adapt assessments that are not validated on individuals with visual impairments
Implement use of multiple sources of valid information/data from formal and informal sources to evaluate effectiveness of intervention, instruction, specialized media, materials, equipment and the physical environment
Participate in professional organizations relative to the field of vision impairment
Participate in and present to trainings on evidence based practices in assessment and instruction
Utilize tools for online engagement in communities of practice specific to visual impairment
Collaborate with educational teams and families on curriculum, instruction and technology issues unique to visual impairment
