Steve, I ran across the same issue when installing Windows 2003 in a
virtual machine in VirtualPC. The solution was to "borrow" the sound
drivers from a Windows XP install disk. Also remember by default the
Windows audio service is not started in Windows 2003. Even though you
are using VMware check out the following link, this may help:
