Hi, my name is Charles Black. I am a recent graduate of the University of South Carolina, go gamecocks. I graduated with a Technology Support And Training Management degree. This name requires a little explanation. Basically, I am educated in the use of Windows Server, Database Programs, Web Development tools, hardware devices, and a basic knowledge of system analysis and design. I can remember the Apple 2E and the Commodore vic20. What that means is that I was computer active in the early 1980's. I am seeking employment in the I T area or any area related to the types of software/hardware listed above. I will help anyone on this list who asks and may seek assistance from others. Let's hope this list can stay on topic and on task whereas extraneous conversation will discourage my attendance. Thanks to the list moderator and hats off to all of you who wish to make a positive contribution to the I T world and blind I T professionals around the Internet. Charles E. Black 4127 Pinehaven Ct. I guess I can put in an early response. <smile> After all, it is the day for early returns, right? I'm J. R. Westmoreland. I hate to say it Al, but I think I've been around longer than the 2E. When I first started in this industry the closest thing to a PC was an Alpha Micro costing about 15-20k. I have spent most of my career at PacifiCorp in IT doing everything from software engineering to system administration. The systems ranged from main frames to hand held meter reading devices. The last eight years I spent doing network engineering and troubleshooting in a network of about a thousand routers and another 1500, or so, switches. After leaving PacifiCorp a couple of years back, the offer was too good to pass up, I'm now working as a consultant/contractor for a number of companies you would recognize. I started out on the mainframe doing assembler, fortran, and cobol programming. Then, moved eventually into unix land doing all aspects of programming. Finally, I'm now, after 30 years in the industry, making the transition to windows and pocket pc programming. Being blind myself, I have need to use many adaptive devices. I have even been teased that I have a Braille display for every purpose and use them all. <smile> I, over the years, have come up with many solutions to various IT related issues. That, while they work for me, and I'm willing to talk about them and lend my experience, may not always work for everyone owing to the technology I have and use which some might not hve access too. My friendship with Al goes back to the days of the fairly early braillenote. He in tech support and I as a user that always wanted it to do just these half dozen more techy things to make it just perfect. And, he saying, "okay, here is what I know. Go see what you can find out. And, let me know if you come up with anything interesting." <grin> I look forward to some interesting items coming off this list as we brainstorm and discuss topics together. Regards, J. Hi everyone, Just wanted to welcome all of you to the list, introduce myself, and hopefully get the ball rolling on a few topics. My name is Al Puzzuoli. Many of you may have seen me floating around various other techy lists over time. I'm blind myself, and have been an avid computer user since the days of the Apple Iie. I've been involved in the computer profession in one way or another throughout my career. I was with HumanWare for a number of years. Nowadays, I'm the Information Technologist at Michigan State University's Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities. I've had a lot of experience with Assistive Technology as well as general PC troubleshooting but now for the first time in my career, I've really gotten the opportunity to focus on the back office side of things. Over the past year and a half, I've learned a ton about network and server administration; However, the more I learn, the more I realize how much I still need to know. There are any number of forums on the net covering topics such as server administration, the rollout of images, etc; However, in my searches, I was never able to find a forum which focused on these topics from a blindness perspective. I'm working on a number of projects right now, from seeking an accessible, cost effective antivirus anti-spam solution for our exchange server, to investigating the accessibility of various platforms on which to run virtual machines. Please feel free to start threads about those, or any other topics in which you might have an interest. If you want to post an introduction, summary of your background, what you hope to gain from this list, etc, please feel free to do that as well. I suggest that if you do post an intro, do it as a reply to this thread. That way, we'll have an ongoing intro thread, and separate threads for any topical issues that may come up. Again, welcome to the list!
