Back in the day, when I was known to have a tote or two, a fine
looking young friend of my second wife moved into our basement for
several months, needing to hide out from several bad choices of male
companionship. Mary loved her heroes, the Rolling Stones, and blasted
the back end of the house, shaking the dishes on the shelf. But along
with this torture, she also had albums of almost everything ever
recorded by Bob Dylan. She also had my favorite band, Moody Blues. I
spent several hours copying those old records to my two-track, reel to
reel recorder. It was all monaural, but the quality was solid and
remains clear even after more than 40 years. In all of that priceless
collection, the only one Cathy will allow to be played within her
dainty ears is Moody Blues at Red Rock. Above all, the Rolling
Stones, the Beetles, Janice Joplin, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Bert and
Ernie singing Rubber Ducky, I consider this to be my finest album. I
even bought the CD, which is in full stereo. But that old reel to
reel tape has some sort of magic, pulling me back to those days in
sunny Spokane. I would lay on the living room carpet with the doors
wide open, playing that album over and over. Suddenly I would jump
up, grab my cane and jog to the corner store and buy a box of candy
bars, usually Peanut Butter Cups or Mars Bars, dash back home and
resume my position on the floor, finally dozing off with the music in
my ears and chocolate on my lips.
