I have no idea about Frank's situation, what years he's talking about, etc.
I will say that at present, one could easily pay $92,000 a year for assisted
living in the New York metro area. First of all, assisted living is a very
inclusive term. It can mean anything from a one or two bedroom apartment
with housekeeping services and 3 meals a day, as well as recreational
programs, trips, and transportation to doctors' appointments and shopping,
to sharing a room in a facility with meals. Then, if you have physical
disabilities or memory problems and require additional services like help
with personal care, reminders about taking medication, etc., fees are added
on for each level of care you need. Skilled nursing facilities in this area
vary widely in quality and the best may leave much to be desired. The cost
is, at this point, more than $350,000 annually. Medicaid doesn't pay for
assisted living. There was a time when you could enter a quality nursing
home as a private patient and then, when your money ran out, the nursing
home would accept Medicaid. But now, some of the best nursing homes will
transfer you to another nursing home if your money runs out. If you go into
a nursing home as a Medicaid patient, it will probably be an inferior
facility. Inferior facilities are pretty awful.

Frank, Could what you wrote be correct? That would mean you paid $92,000 a
year for your father's care in assisted living. Even if it were full
nursing care that would be terribly expensive. How could anyone afford to
be there?

Marsha, when my late father was in assisted living for the last few years it
cost $500 per day of which the VA paid half and I paid half.

Any kind of assisted living, even very little, is like $3000 a month. who
has that kind of money?
