When I was in the 6th and 7th grades, the Barnes Brothers came to
town. And they took over the school yard. The Brothers were both in
the 7th grade, although Bill was 15 and Jim was 14. What they lacked
in brain power, they more than made up in "Big Power". And mean. So
there I was, with a couple of other boys, shooting marbles out back of
the baseball diamond, using my prized Cats Eye and my collection of
Steelies, when around the back board came the two Barnes Brothers,
looking sour and itching for trouble. Bully Bill reached out and
snatched up my Cats Eye right out of the circle drawn in the dirt.
"Hey! That's mine", I shouted. "Finders keepers", he sneered as he
shoved my face into the ground. Jungle Jim then came up behind me and
grabbed my bag of Steelies. "Thanks kid", he chortled. "I didn't
think you liked me, and here you are, giving me a gift". We used to
go to the office and complain. But we learned the hard way that this
did no good. The marbles would be gone and it would be their word
against ours. One time the principal kept the brothers after school,
cleaning erasers. The next day, after school, I headed down the hill
from the school yard, only to round the corner and see the two
brothers waiting for me.
So who will stand up with Cuba and force the Bully Brothers to return
the Land they grabbed?
The United Nations? The Soviet Union...oops, now where did they go...
Probably the sad fact of the matter is that Cubans will have to wait
until the American Empire falls. Which it is destined to do. As all
Empires go. But remember, Rome ruled for a thousand years.

‘Return Guantánamo to Cuba now!’

WASHINGTON — We have “diplomatic relations not normal relations with the
U.S. government,” Miguel Fraga, First Secretary of the Cuban Embassy,
told a meeting at the University of the District of Columbia here April
2. “The U.S. embargo is the main obstacle.” He also called for the
return of U.S.-occupied Guantánamo to Cuba.
The meeting, attended by 60 people, was organized by the D.C. Metro
Coalition in Solidarity with the Cuban Revolution and co-hosted by the
UDC David A. Clarke School of Law.
Fraga pointed to gains made by the revolution despite the economic
embargo, like keeping 50,281 Cuban volunteer health care workers in 68
countries.
The embargo prevents Cuba from “upgrading its infrastructure” and
acquiring needed resources, Fraga said. It also prevents medical
advances made by Cuba from being utilized around the world, including a
drug treatment developed in Cuba that reduces the need for amputations
in diabetics by 70 percent.
In response to a question about racial discrimination in Cuba, Fraga
said, “Cuba does not have a problem with discrimination like in the
United States.” There are “equal opportunities.”
Another participant asked if Havana could offer the U.S. government “a
face-saving way out of Guantánamo.”
“Guantánamo is part of Cuba,” Fraga said, and has to be “returned
immediately” for there to be normal relations.
