One of my points, though, is that it is not only men who call women whose names they do not know honey. In my experience, at least around here, women call them honey too. Nevertheless, once I became self conscious of it I promptly dropped it.

Yes, well I think that, "Honey", is sexist or patronizing or something on that order. But
it's a typical way for certain kinds of men to refer to women. I was struck with the
inappropriateness of Trump introducing Kellyann Conway to an audience, and after he told them who
she was and asked her to come up to the microphone, he said something like, "Come here
Kellyann. Come here, Sweetheart. Kellyann, Baby". It really sounded awful. The tone of his
voice was dripping with, well I think it was sexual innuendo.

I much prefer informality, but I don't think I would feel entirely comfortable with a
complete stranger calling me dear either. And that reminds me of another discussion I had
once. The question was what do you call someone whose name you don't know. I was
discussing this with someone once because it was led to by another subject we were
discussing. I was discussing the topic of sexism with another man and a part of the
conversation touched on inappropriately familiar forms of address that some men used
toward women. I suddenly realized that I might be a little guilty of that myself and I
then brought up what do we call someone whose name we do not know. With men it is easy.
You say, for example, "Hey man, come here a minute." But what if it is a woman?
It sounds really awkward and a bit rude to say, "Hey woman, come here a minute." Well, I
had gotten into the habit of calling them honey. I also knew exactly where I had gotten that from.
Just about everyone I came in contact with did that. Whether the person speaking was male or female
they called any woman whose name they did not know honey and I had picked up the habit. The man I
was talking to was not from around here and he thought it was regional because it was not his
experience to have heard that so much. In retrospect I think he was right. If I had gone to another
state I probably would not have heard women called honey so much. Anyway, I knew that I had not
always done that, but I could not think of what I had called them before. However, I had made
myself self conscious of it. After I had that conversation I found myself addressing a cashier or a
waitress or some other woman I didn't know and right when I was about to call her honey I would
stop myself and just talk to her without calling her anything. That was the advice the man with
whom I had the conversation gave me and he said that he didn't call them anything. Now I think I
have figured out what I called women whose name I did not know before I picked up the habit of
honey. I called them what I call them now, nothing. I just speak to them. If it was in a situation
where calling them nothing might be ambiguous like in a crowded restaurant I might point at them
and say, "Hey you," but now that I can't see it would be difficult to get their attention
no matter what I called them. By the way, when I was calling them honey I never met with any
objections.
On 2/16/2017 9:28 AM, Miriam Vieni wrote:
What that woman was calling me in the hospital was, "Dear", which I found to be
patronizing and over familiar. People tend to call old people and children, "Dear".  In
the New York metropolitan area, I doubt any doctor would refer to him or her self by his or her
first name. My friend, Art, who was 22 years older than I, said that if our eye doctor felt
comfortable calling him, Art, without first asking his permission, then he didn't see why he
couldn't call our doctor, Joseph, which is his first name. But I don't think he ever did so.

Speaking of changes in language and its usage I am reminded of something.
Furthermore, in trying to place the incident I am about to mention it occurs to
me that I have now been participating on this list for quite a number of years
now. How time flies. Anyway, some years ago Miriam was talking about an
experience she had in a hospital and I forget what they were calling  her, but
she said that she would prefer to be addressed by her name, Mrs. Vienni. I said
that I wouldn't want to be addressed that way. I don't consider Mr. Bailey to
be my name and I would prefer to be just called Roger. Then I went on to tell a
story about a past hospital stay when I kept hearing Mr. Bailey over and over
and finally said that Roger was fine with me. It caused the rest of my hospital
stay to be awkward as one nurse after another hesitantly and incredulously
asked me if I wanted to be addressed by my first name. It left me wishing I had
never said anything about it. It was not that big a deal.
Well, some time after that list discussion I found myself in hospital again. That was when I had a
catheter infection in April 2013. That was almost four years ago. It doesn't seem that long and
that is why I am saying how time flies. As I was being admitted a nurse or some woman in the employ
of the hospital was asking me questions while filling out a form. Along came a question asked in a
casual manner right along with the other questions. "What would you like to be called?" I
answered, "Roger is fine. I think Mr. Bailey is just too formal." For the rest of my stay
I was on a first name basis with all the nurses and nursing assistants and there was no awkwardness
at all. Everyone did, though, make a point of addressing all the doctors with the title doctor.
Then I did mention on this list my last visit to a urologist, I think, just this past October. She
was one Dr. Broughton, but she didn't call herself Dr. Broughton. She introduced herself as
Claudina and while I was there she called my pharmacy and left a voice mail in which she identified
herself as Claudina. I remember wondering if the pharmacy people thought that she was her
assistant. I am so glad that these medical people are loosening up the formality in their speech.
It makes me feel more comfortable in seeking medical treatment.
On 2/15/2017 12:56 PM, Carl Jarvis wrote:
Of course, Roger, what I actually demonstrated was my age.  To have
said, "fart" or, "Butt" when I was a boy, would place me in a corner
either having had my mouth washed out with a bar of soap, or with a
teaspoon of red pepper on my tongue.  Fuck would probably have put me
in the hospital.  And of course, my mother could make any word sound
like swearing.  "Beer" was a beverage she hated.  And when she said
it, well, you just knew it was a really really bad thing.
Over the years I came to believe that there are no "bad" words.
And I also decided that if a person gets their message across to me,
how they mangle the language is not important.
Language, like our other possessions, is nothing more than an attempt
to demonstrate our cleverness and superiority over others.

apparent intent to shock anyone. It is kind of equal to dagnabit.
Even as a notoriously literal minded person I can see that.

We are a violent people.  Worse than our violence is our denial
that we are a violent people.  But before I go forward on this
subject, something in the article struck me as very, very
wrong...and perhaps points back to our denial.  We can write the
word, "Fuck" over and over again, when quoting people's outrage and
anger, but we write, "N****" when referring to the word, Nigger.
Despite the fact that many of my people came to this Land as
Freemen, they were mostly humble peasants, the working class of
their day.  Of course they participated in the slaughter of the
occupants of this New World, but they were seldom found in the
mansions of the Landed Gentry, unless they were among the servants.
Nonetheless, I become as insulted and outraged when some frothy
mouthed asshole shouts in my face, "Go Fuck yourself!", as I am
sure a Black person is outraged by being called, "Nigger".  No real
point here, just an observation about our decision to use one word for shock
value and another as a taboo.
But back to my ramble.  We are, as I claim, a violent people in
full denial.  We show up in great numbers on Sunday morning to sing
praises to a God of Love, and then shove one another in our hurry
to get out of the parking lot first.  We nod and smile at folks we
know in the grocery store, but shove our cart ahead of others in
our rush to be first in line.  We step back to allow someone to
come off a bus, before we clamber aboard, only to have that person
angrily shove us to one side.  Growing road rage, marital
violence, child abuse, envy and suspicion seem to be controlling our lives.
All of us...my sociology professor told me never to say, "All"...so
I do, in his memory, but All of us have two sides, living inside
us...sort of like the two heads of our same political party...and
these sides are in conflict.  Our upbringing, our Life's
experiences along with our genetic makeup determines which side
gets most of our attention, and thus, dictates how we deal with the world
around us.
And there are those among us who quickly understand that they can
elevate themselves by manipulating us.  Far too long we Humans have
allowed ourselves to be herded toward the negative side within us.
We must, for our own survival, turn to that other positive side,
and feed it and nurture it.  But in order to do so, we must come to
terms with our denial of our violent nature.
As a boy, I remember hearing horse trainers say, "Break the horse"
when talking about preparing a young horse for riding.  Today we
see more trainers "preparing" their young horses.  They have
learned the difference between breaking a horses spirit, and
gaining its cooperation...as partners rather than as Master and Servant.
Why can't we apply such conditioning to our own people?  Why are
our prisons full of people being broken, rather than conditioned.
Until we deal with our denial of our violent nature, we will most
likely continue to build more and bigger prisons.

When a group is an “other,” it’s easier to attack them, or to
strip them of their civil rights. Our tracker documented this time
and again.

But in another sense, Islamophobia isn’t something that can ever
be tracked comprehensively. There’s too much of it, and not every
instance becomes a headline.

It’s ubiquitous in the daily lives of Muslim Americans. It’s when

This year, we won’t be updating the Islamophobia Tracker. The
story is so much bigger than a dataset now. But we will continue
telling stories of hate and extremism. And we will pay close
attention to the new presidential administration that seems
hell-bent on vilifying Muslims and persecuting them.

Having tracked hate for a year, we’re able to see that people who
disparaged Muslim Americans are mostly reading from the same old
script. It’s possible even to look at our project as a kind of
how-to guide for anti-Muslim bigotry ― a list of six “rules” of
Islamophobia in America.

And if we’re going to help protect our Muslim neighbors,
coworkers, friends and family, these are six “rules” that
desperately need to be dismantled and destroyed.

Rule 1: Muslims are not American.
