In the 90's, The U of South Dakota in the Black Hills, the name of the town
escapes me, had a summer program for visually impaired people, originated by
Don Nold, I believe. Anyway, I participated and I remember the cost of housing.
One could live in a lovely condo or very large house for a fraction of the cost
of housing in the New York metro area. But it was in South Dakota, with its
weather and its particular cultural and recreational resources. You'd need to
weigh the advantages against the disadvantages.

Good Mother's Day morning, Frank.
Although I've only traveled a modest amount around this good old USA, I do
possess a natural curiosity which has taken me to many places and times I could
never have afforded, nor lived enough lives, to have seen in person. One thing
I have learned from all of my real or imagined travels is that the cost of
living is weighted heavily in favor of those on the financial peak. In my
wanderings I have been to places where my retirement funds would appear to
allow me to live a much higher quality of life than where I now live. But in
closer examination I find that people in my financial bracket are actually no
better off. And for those of working age who think they might do better in
this place or that, will find that over time their life style will be very
little different than that of where they now live.
I'm reminded of those poor peasants of long ago who believed that in America
they would walk on streets paved with gold. Or those starving, oppressed early
American farmers and factory workers who fell for the promotion that "Out West
you could scoop gold nuggets from every creek in California"...or later, in
Alaska. Those sad Souls who staggered back home, poorer but not always wiser,
found that the real gold had been gathered by the Outfitters.
Poor people paid high prices to board trains and stake claims on tracts of
land, clear it and plant it only to find that the same railroad which had taken
them to this "Promised Land" now held the control over how much it would cost
to ship their crops to market.
But just enough of these folk made it work, to become part of the fabric of the
never ending Fairy Tale of "rags to riches" in a Land that was owned and
controlled by a few privileged families.
The facts are that we Americans have been duped. And we have been so duped
that we even participate in our own "Dupidness".
So, Frank, while I would welcome you to the Great Pacific Northwest with open
arms, we are all better off staying where we have some measure of influence,
and continuing to press for a replacement government. A People First
government that raises the standard of life for the Working Class People, and
levels the mansions that sit high on the hills behind those ornamental iron
gates.
In fact, we might consider giving them the same opportunity that they and their
predecessors gave our people, the chance to "Go West, Young Man!" I think
there are several empty cattle barges ready to load and head for Asia.

Lacey, Washington is a suburb of Olympia, Washington's capitol. It's
not Arizona, but it is a bit drier than Seattle. If you love
mountains, forests, salt water, and nice people, this is the job for you.
