The Center for Investigative Reporting has a podcast called, "Reveal". The
episode that I heard today was shocking to me and I didn't think that
anything would shock me. It was all about imprisonment. The shocking part
was about women imprisoned in Oklahoma. The numbers of women being
imprisoned are rising, faster than men, and their prison terms are long.
Most of the women I heard about are white and they were imprisoned for being
involved with drugs in one way or another, sometimes selling them, sometimes
just taking them. The explanation, given by officials in Oklahoma for the
large number of women being sent to prison and the harsh sentences is that
these are people from small communities, people who are well known by their
neighbors, people who are trusted to be good wives and mothers. They are
being punished for not fulfilling the expectations of their communities. The
other terrible story was about a black man in New Jersey who was falsely
accused of raping a woman. He was advised by his public defender to plead
guilty so he could serve less time because he had been identified by someone
present in the courtroom as being the rapist and if he went through a trial,
his sentence would surely be much worse. So he reluctantly admitted to the
rape which he had not committed, was sentenced to seven years, and served
his time. At the end of the seven years, instead of releasing him, the State
of New Jersey placed him in a civil detention program for dangerous sexual
predators. The time he was kept in this program was determined by some kind
of numerical score. I think he was there for fourteen additional years with
no way of seeking release. During all of this time, he was studying law.
Upon release, he discovered that the person in the courtroom who'd
identified him had been found to have lied. He's now 52 years old, in his
second year of law school and he's suing everyone who was involved with his
case.
