That kind of thing can happen and no matter what venue you use if you are in a sensitive position you had better give some thought to what you say  or you might get yourself in trouble. Donald Trump should learn that lesson. As for myself, there are two kinds of tweets that come out of my Twitter account. A long time ago I clicked the button on my Goodreads settings that allow my Goodreads updates to post to both Twitter and Facebook. I tend to forget about those unless I just happen to see one on my own timeline. All the other tweets are of a political nature and given the profiles of my followers I think that most of them are following me especially for my political tweets. One time and one time only I got an insulting reply to one of my political tweets. I just skipped over it and forgot about it. The only reason I remembered it just now was because of the personal sniping you mentioned. As for the personal sniping wars of other people on Twitter, I haven't seen it. I expect that is because I don't have much interest in following the types who would engage in it. And that illustrates another of my points. Whether it is Twitter or Facebook or just about anything else on the Internet, you have to decide what you want to come your way and filter out the rest. There is a whole lot of utter nonsense out there, but anyone who wants to avoid it can. Of course there is the occasional spam or is-this-a-coyote-or-a-dog post, but there are still ways to minimize them. And if you like stuff like that then there are ways to maximize them too.

I read article which include tweets every day. Public figures, journalists, etc., are using twitter in order to comment on daily events and to snipe at each other. There are all sorts of twitter wars going on between people which can become very vicious, I believe, partly  because of the limits of the medium. Sometimes, people write things that sound more extreme than how they really feel. Do you remember Steven Solaida? He was a professor of indigenous studies at the University of Virginia and he had just been hired at the University of Illinois. He tweeted about the Israeli attack on Gaza in 2014 and the pro Israel people who donated money to the University of Illinois were so horrified by his tweet, that they put pressure on the administration to cancel his appointment. He hasn’t had a steady university job since although he won a case suing the University of Illinois. The tweet was written quickly, off the top of his head, and sounded extreme. I don’t know for sure but had he written a carefully thought out article, the outcome might have been very different.

Admittedly 140 characters is frustratingly restrictive, but the trick is to state only a headline and then provide a link to the original source. Like Facebook there is a little bit of everything that one could follow. It really does seem kind of silly to just refuse to use it without even understanding what it is all about and then expressing some kind of moral superiority at depriving oneself of the resource.

I’m certainly not on twitter. The idea of thinking that one can
adequately express an idea in 140 characters is ridiculous. It’s
just a way to lash out at others or inflate one’s ego, as far as
I’m concerned. Facebook is a huge money making operation and is
not the way I want to communicate with anyone!Even my kids who are
53 and 45 don’t use it. And if I could manage it, and I almost do,
I’d boycott Amazon because I don’t want a monopoly doing all the
selling in the world. I have ideas about right and wrong and I’ve
tried to live my values. But as society becomes more and more
corrupt, it becomes harder and harder to do so. I’ll hold out,
    wherever I can.

It was just a personal post that was forwarded around and happened to
come my way. Maybe you wouldn't be on Facebook, but you have made
    plenty
of personal posts right here yourself.
