Carl, how were the holidays for you?
If they were anything like ours, then you might have spent some time
on an airplane — one that hopefully arrived on, or close to schedule.
The FAA's air traffic controllers are the unsung heroes of keeping our
airways safe, and our flights on time as much as possible. But now
they're under attack from Republicans and lobbyists for the major
airlines who want to privatize the system for their own benefit.
Canada and the UK have privatized their air traffic control systems,
and the results are what you might expect: higher costs for
passengers, less democratic oversight, and job losses.
Why would we do the same?
Click here to sign the petition urging Congress NOT to privatize air
traffic controllers.
Privatization could result in a new monopoly corporation calling the
shots on how much to charge for air traffic control services and how
to allocate resources. Look no further than the UK, where new fees and
existing taxes on every ticket increased by 140%.
Depend on a small regional airport to get you where you need to go?
Many Americans do, and privatization could hurt those airports the
most — perhaps forcing them out of business altogether due to
cost-prohibitive air traffic control services.
The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will likely be taking
up the issue this month, and activists like us have to let them know
now: the FAA needs stable, long-term funding to keep our country's
skies safe, not more outsourcing.
