January 10, 1995 - June 30, 2020
Dear Friends,
In the life of one person, 25 years is a very short time. But in the
life of a Rehabilitation Program, 25 years, covering Grays Harbor,
Mason, Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap counties brought hope and support
to more than 3,000 blind and low vision Seniors.
So many interesting people! So many new friends.
From Aberdeen to Neah Bay, to Point No Point, to Port Orchard, we
discovered a new and exciting world, along back roads we never knew
existed, and down hidden old logging roads to meet with people living
in the "Middle of Nowhere". 25 years of struggling to stretch our
meager dollars in order to
provide enough services. I often told people that it was like putting
band aids on open wounds. And yet we learned that the services we
provided, as meager as we thought them to be, brought hope and joy to
so many folks. People raved when we simply showed them how to put a
key in the door, or how to hold a magnifier, or "that wonderful
talking watch". Just the fact that someone cared for them was enough
to lift a heavy load from lonely, forgotten shoulders.
That was actually our greatest contribution. We set out in our Blue
Ford Truck, armed with a few gadgets and a road
map. What a different world 25 years make. Change takes place so
gradually that we never notice until we stop and look back. Makes me
wonder what the year 2045 will bring. I'll be 110 that year, so don't
try calling me up.
But I wanted to put PRS to bed, and let folks know how much Cathy and
I have enjoyed the trip. Your friendship and quiet support have
helped us through some rough times. We need to keep the needs of
blind people in the Public Eye, staying strong and
active as the world goes through this pandemic and the changes that
will surely follow.
