Freelists has a flag that can be set for each user called ackpost. What that
does is send back an acknowledgment email every time someone successfully posts
an email to the list.

You are getting through. Again, with Gmail the default setting is that you do
not receive your own messages on email lists. If you want to get them look at
your Gmail settings. I think you can change that.
