Miriam, I have a friend that goes to Amazon and looks up women's swimsuits
before he does a Google search and then when he does the Google search he gets
ads with women in bikinis in them.

That reminds me of the book I recently finished, The Age of Surveillance
Capitalism. The author's point is that every time you do a search on Google, or
post on Facebook, or look on Amazon, you inadvertently provide information to
whichever big tech company is involved, which it then sells to its customers,
which are other companies. There is nothing that you do which isn't monetized
in some way. When you sign a user agreement for a piece of software, you are
being coerced, because there's no choice involved.

Yesterday morning Cathy went to a link that promised to provide information
showing how to secure low cost health coverage. She looked at the web page and
said that she was not about to provide them with the personal information they
requested. So she closed the site.
About an hour later the phone began to ring. It was in response to her
"request" for information. We disconnected and hardly went back about our
business when the phone rang again. We have caller ID, so most of our calls
are identified both on a screen and by voice. After counting 20 calls from
companies wanting to help us, we lost count.
This morning at 8:01 A.M. the phone began to ring. So far I've only had 3
calls in 20 minutes.
So, how is it that merely opening a web page connects someone to an army of
predators? And just how many eyes and ears are quietly taking in our every
word? Big Brother? No, it's far, far bigger than that.
I wonder, is Donald Trump really building a Wall to keep folks out?
Or will that wall really keep us in our Prison of the Formerly Free?
Carl Jarvis , learning once again that there are more eyes and ears than those
of the little forest friends, tracking our every move.
