I remember that when I visited Australia back in 1987, I thought that in a lot 
of ways, the mentality there, resembled that of Texas. At any rate, given what 
I observed about Australian society, and what I've read about it since then, I 
think that if they were able to work out a system for gun control, it must 
certainly be possible to set up a workable system here. They didn't ban all 
guns. They banned all military style weapons, assault and semi assault weapons. 
They set up a strict licensing system which involves a thorough background 
check and recording of every sale.  I imagine that there are a lot of people, 
those living in ghetto areas, women who live with abusive husbands or 
boyfriends, people who have become fearful about attending large public 
gatherings, parents with children in school, college students, who would be 
grateful for a government that would be willing to protect them from gun 
violence and would refuse to allow the gun lobby to profit by selling more and 
more semi automatic guns and attachments which turn them into automatic guns.

Hi Miriam,
Glad to here how well the gun buyback went in Austrailia. I guess I figure that 
many Americans who have lots of guns now will not be willing to participate in 
a program like that. Then what do you do? I don't think I want big brother 
conducting raids to reduce the number of guns on the streets. Imagine the aguse 
that would occur with a program like that one?
