True, I'm sure that all these people, White Nationalists, Islamic
Extremists, militant patriots, the people who kill abortion providers, are
guided by philosophies which have been provided to them by various extremist
groups. But I was making two additional points. 1. In order to follow those
philosophies, the individual must be very troubled, perhaps mentally ill,
perhaps having had an extremely difficult life, and 2. Some people use a
philosophical framework but they are actually mentally ill and are
hallucinating at the time of the crime.

Miriam, A case could be made that anyone who runs a truck into people is
unstable. But, just as any religious zealot, perhaps he just believes the
religious philosophy he espouses. The note he wrote was word for word
copied from a ISIS handbook published last Nov on exactly this kind of
terror, and then the note you should leave. Which he did.

We don't actually know what the motivating factors are. We know what the guy
wrote on a piece of paper and what he said, but that doesn't mean that we
know what motivated him. He may have been emotionally unstable. He may have
had hallucinations. Do we know what motivated that guy to shoot all those
people in Nevada? Do we know what motivated that guy who shot all those
children at Sandy Hook? What about that guy in Denmark who killed so many
people several years ago? He also stated a philosophy which was anti-Muslim.
All of these people who kill, have reasons like the man who drove the car
into the crowd in Charlottesville. Many of them adhere to a philosophical
framework. But the question is, what are the real underlying reasons .
