Miriam,
I believe that the answer is "All of the Above".
In fact, some long time families of Mexican extraction became Mexican,
Texan, and American citizens without ever leaving home.  Our eldest
grandson's first wife came from a Mexican American family.  Her
parents, grandparents, great grandparents and great great grandparents
lived in, or close to the same place in Arizona, long before it was
part of the USA.  And yet, when we would take her to dinner at our
local Mexican restaurant, the staff would always speak to her in
Spanish.  But neither she nor anyone in her immediate family spoke
anything but English.   Whenever she was asked her ethnicity, she
would smile and say, "American".
While she looked every bit the Conchita, her roots were deeply
American, and her ancestry was of no interest to her.

wrong. Perhaps they've been here for 100  years and they may not have any
Indian heritage and they fully identify with White America. Or maybe they're
like the cappos, the Jews in the concentration camps who kept the other Jews

I want to mention this. Miriam expressed dismay that people with Hispanic
names would express such prejudice against the immigrants and that it was
against their own people. Well, I doubt that they consider them to be their
own people. I am named Bailey, for example, and I don't feel any particular
connection to Ireland. Besides, my maternal family had a German surname and
on both sides of the family there are English, Scottish and other names. My
mother once got a family genealogy from a relative that showed a female
Cherokee ancestor too. The Irishness of Bailey just does not mean much and I
expect that it doesn't mean a lot to a lot of people with Hispanic surnames
either.

Prejudice runs far deeper than a person's ethnicity or the color of
their skin, or their sex.
To my own prejudiced mind, I can't understand how any woman could vote
for Donald Trump.  Or why so many blond women tried to get next to O J
Simpson after his trial?

The border situation continues to spiral. It doesn???t seem to have
fully sunk in that there was a private Facebook group of some 10,000
current and former Border Patrol employees, many of them in
supervisory roles, that in many respects was indistinguishable from a
standard racist Facebook hate group.
Their word for immigrants is ???tonks??? -- a reference to the sound
their flashlights make when they smash them against the heads of men,
women, and children fleeing (US-driven) violence in Central America.
The group was exposed last week by ProPublica, but a reporter of ours
had gotten access to it previously (though had yet to publish his
story), and was able to archive much of the material before the group
started trying to delete it. What he found is appalling enough that
the entire leadership of this rogue agency ought to resign in disgrace.
