Apparently Facebook uses algorithms that not only analyze your behavior on Facebook, but all over the web. Like I said, when I first set up my profile I had no behavior on Facebook at all. Yet, Facebook was able to recommend friends who did have a connection to me even if very very tenuously. They could only have done that by running a search on me on the Internet in the background.

I too have wondered Roger how Facebook advertises something to me that I never had any connection to on facebook, the sites I visit, or 'friends' (whom I have none).

Facebook does learn. I told you how it was getting its targeted
advertising more and more close to things I would be interested in even
if I still have not bought anything from a Facebook ad. But here is
something even more interesting. Facebook also recommends friends. Right
after I set up my profile I had a recommendation of someone on an email
list that I was subscribed to. Other than that we were both on the
Stream Users list at the time I can't say that we had much in common
though. But Facebook seems to be learning other things about me. I was
just now looking at my friend recommendations and one of them was from
Korea. I looked at his profile and he is in Seoul and describes himself
as a communist. Here is a quote from Trotsky that he has on his profile
that I rather like:

To face reality squarely; not to seek the line of least resistance; to
call things by their right names; to speak the truth to the masses, no
matter how bitter it may be; not to fear obstacles; to be true in little
things as in big ones; to base one’s program on the logic of the class
struggle; to be bold when the hour for action arrives – these are the
rules of the Fourth International. ─ Leon Trotsky, The Transitional Program
