It definitely sounds to be some sort of dementia. One of my former clients
developed early onset Alzheimers, which is common enough for those with Downs
syndrome who reach their fifties; another who isn't Downs has what appears to be
Pick's disease, a form of dementia highlighted by obsession with food and
combativeness. Had two students with Battons disease, which tends to manifest
in the early teens and causes blindness as one of its first symptoms. One died
at the age of seventeen, and the other was almost seventeen before he had to be
placed in a nursing home. Childhood dementia is the hardest to face, I've found
in my own experience. One client went into a memory center in Sequim after
developing dementia secondary to a stroke. Her husband lived barely a year
after she went into the nursing home setting, dying of circulatory failure. I
believe she is still alive and was doing well last time I saw her, although
she'll never be able to live on her own with the major gaps in her memories and
reasoning ability.
Dementia is its own study!
