Hi Miriam and carl,
You both make good points here but I agree with carl that neither side is clean
here. Yes, the hard right has apparently taken over SCOTUS. But I hope you'll
all agree that Feinstein put her nasty thumb on the scale as well by
withholding the Ford allegations from the Judiciary Committee until the last
possible moment. IF she were truly concerned about Kavanaugh's treatment of
women, she really needed to release that info to the committee, behind closed
dors, right away.
Sad all the way around. As usuall, everyone gets all hot and bothered, but the
same old stuff happens behind the seens.

Miriam and All,
We'll have to agree to disagree. I believe that from the day the colonists
murdered the first Indigenous Person, and claimed the land, the American Empire
was being conceived. Our Forefathers drafted a Constitution that protected
their right to conquer and plunder. The young United States of America swept
across the North American continent, murdering those who occupied the land, and
butchering vast herds of wildlife. This Land of the Free and Home of the Brave
took a huge portion of land from Mexico. Of course it was land that the
Spaniards took from those inhabiting the land already.
Upon reaching the Pacific ocean, and after an aborted effort to seize Canada,
our great Empire turned to conquering Central and South America, through
economic controls. Then we moved across the Pacific Ocean.
We are, and have been an Empire from the very beginning. And we have been
everything we claim to hate about other Empires. We go into the homes of other
nations and sneer at them, proclaiming our ways to be so superior to theirs.
Still, many of us living on this land are excluded in several ways from
meaningful participation in the Empire's affairs. I consider myself to be an
onlooker, no matter how much I once labored in the trenches. What I say or do
is not going to be heard much beyond my own flapping fingers and lips.
And now, Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me will have a 2 hour special on NPR today, So
I'm off to my trusty kitchen radio. And later today I will cheer on the
Huskies of the University of Washington...even as I draw back from the violence
of the "sport". Ah, life's little contradictions.

It's not the American Empire. It's one sector of the American elite,

rights, women's rights, LGBT rights, civil rights. We're going back to the
1800's.

My Dear Robert Reich,
I also feel the anger. But I do not see it as a sham. What it is, is
the American Corporate Empire protecting itself. Even though Donald
Trump bad mouths the FBI on the one hand, on the other hand the FBI is
the tool of the Establishment, and will do the Empire's bidding. We,
the Working Class folk, seem to forget that we do not have a place in
the running of this Empire. Our place is in the fields, in the
factories, driving the trucks and cleaning the homes of the Ruling Class.
It's high time the American Working Class woke up and smelled the
instant caffeinated coffee.

As the nation slept, the White House announced that the FBI has
completed its investigation into sexual assault allegations against
Brett Kavanaugh.
Agents were not allowed to interview dozens of people who could
provide additional information, including Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford
themselves.
The report will now go to the Senate, where McConnell will only allow
senators to view the report in a secure location. He also refuses to
release the findings, what little they might offer, to the public.
Before the investigation was even complete, McConnell began the
process for a vote on Kavanaugh.
If this isn't a sham investigation, I don't know what is. In less
than a week, Trump, McConnell, and Kavanaugh have managed to make a
mockery of the Senate, the FBI, and the Supreme Court. Beyond that,
this charade is an insult to the American people.
