This week’s Economic Snapshot
(http://www.epi.org/publication/almost-two-thirds-of-people-in-the-labor-force-do-not-have-a-college-degree/?utm_source=Economic+Policy+Institute&utm_campaign=bc084127fa-EPI_News_04_01_164_1_2016&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e7c5826c50-bc084127fa-58196449)
explains that people without a college degree constitute nearly
two-thirds of the U.S. labor force—and make up the majority of the
labor force in every state (excluding the District of Columbia). It is
no secret that wages for typical workers have stagnated
(http://www.epi.org/productivity-pay-gap/?utm_source=Economic+Policy+Institute&utm_campaign=bc084127fa-EPI_News_04_01_164_1_2016&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e7c5826c50-bc084127fa-58196449)
over the past 35 years. We cannot solve the problem of low and
stagnating wages for non-college-educated workers by expecting
everyone to pursue more education. We need solutions that will raise
wages for all workers

------------------------------------------------------------

Professor Lester Thurow of MIT, one of EPI’s founders and intellectual
inspirations, passed away this week. Thurow, a prominent, globally
respected economist, was part of a small group who established EPI 30
years ago. He enthusiastically supported the idea of a think tank that
would study and debate economic policy from the perspective of people
who work for a living. Jeff Faux, EPI’s founding president, praised
Thurow as a brilliant and intellectually courageous economist. “He
understood that economics is embedded in human institutions, whose
impact was important, even though at times it cannot be quantified.
History has proven him right,” Faux said.

------------------------------------------------------------

The Supreme Court’s 4-4 decision in Friedrichs v. California Teachers
Association is a victory for working people, explained EPI’s Ross
Eisenbrey
(http://www.epi.org/press/friedrichs-decision-is-a-win-for-workers-albeit-a-temporary-one/?utm_source=Economic+Policy+Institute&utm_campaign=bc084127fa-EPI_News_04_01_164_1_2016&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e7c5826c50-bc084127fa-58196449)
. The case concerned whether public-sector employees who receive the
benefits of a collective bargaining agreement should be required to
pay their fair share of the cost of negotiating and protecting those
benefits, regardless of whether they belong to a union. EPI has
conducted research on Friedrichs and other threats to the rights of
working people to collectively negotiate with their employers. This
research includes a report
(http://www.epi.org/publication/on-friedrichs-v-california-teachers-association-the-inextricable-links-between-exclusive-representation-agency-fees-and-the-duty-of-fair-representation/?utm_source=Economic+Policy+Institute&utm_campaign=bc084127fa-EPI_News_04_01_164_1_2016&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e7c5826c50-bc084127fa-58196449)
examining how public employees in so-called right-to-work states earn
roughly $1,000 less than their counterparts in fair-share
states, as well as a fact sheet

explaining how collective bargaining raises wages and improves the
standard of living for all workers.
