YES!
Hillary Clinton's nomination to lead the Democratic Party is a loud and
righteous crack in the highest of glass ceilings, and one that our whole
nation can celebrate as historically important and profound. As a mom to an
8-year-old daughter, it is all the more meaningful to me that she may well
see our nation's first African-American president pass the baton to our
nation's first female president.
Yet, as much as my heart swells after Thursday's historic night, it's
important to remember that millions of women across the country are
struggling daily to make ends meet and provide for their families, as they
exist in a political system that for too long has ignored their struggles.
Let's build on this progress in a way that lifts working-class women, women
of color, and their families.
We can choose policies that end the sting of sexism American women still
feel, that remove the indignity of lower wages for comparable and equal
work, and that address an antiquated social contract in a society where
women and mothers work. For working-class and women of color, especially,
our nation's economic rules and social policies leave far too many strapped
and trapped in the quest for a better life for themselves and their
families.
If we truly want to live in a country where all our families are strong and
our kids' dreams are within reach, we need new economic rules that really
work for women and their families.
These include policies that finally provide

=7783acf2d2&e=82148ff32c> paid family leave and affordable, high-quality
child care so that parenthood is no longer sentences millions of women and
children to poverty and economic anguish. It means toughening

=8a4d4f462a&e=82148ff32c> labor protections, creating good

=7b4c4d59d1&e=82148ff32c> jobs with decent wages, enacting fairer tax
policies, making

=5ac1ef0659&e=82148ff32c> public college debt-free and creating a path to
citizenship for immigrants.
Yet, as shown time and time again, enacting these policies is no small
challenge. To advance a real women's agenda, Clinton will have to fight the
prevalent narrative that the government is too big and that undeserving
people, often symbolized by women of color and poor women, enjoy too much
government aid. Indeed,

dog-whistles to divide us and to create the economic inequality that holds
so many women back.
This takes courage and a commitment to race-conscious populism. This also
means tirelessly going to battle for these policies, despite their long
odds.
Today's feminism has to be a fighting feminism, taking on not just
patriarchy but hierarchy as it shows up in an economy that doesn't work for
most of us.
