Part of the problem with plastic bags is that they end up in landfills, even
when we recycle. I recall reading a piece a few years ago that chided the
recycling industry for tossing much of what is collected into landfills, if
true, that's pretty disgusting.
WE use both the plastic bags and the reusables. The reusables work well when
we use paratransit and Uber to get to and from the stores. But they don't
work so well when Donna walks to our local grocery store and uses her
portable grocery cart. The cart does not have enough room for the reusables.
IT is easier to maneuver the plastic bags into the smaller space.
WE also reuse some of the plastic bags for things like bringing lunch to
work or cleaning the cat box. I do share the concern that charging for
plastic bags will have an unfair impact on the poorest among us.
